This book applies historicised psychoanalytic thinking in a non-reductive way to better understand the dominant emotional trends in contemporary cultural and socio-political life, with a specific focus on the relationship between social dislocation, narcissism, and "post truth".
Rapid social dislocation and change are ubiquitous in late capitalist societies, though these processes may be felt unequally. Following the work of the late Christopher Lasch, Everything is Permitted, Restrictions Still Apply suggests there are powerful narcissistic trends in contemporary life mitigating against the capacity to acknowledge and face these changes; in other words, against the capacity to face reality and to mourn. There is a tendency to assert the primacy of a compelling emotional narrative over the claims of evidence and expertise, and to relate to others, past and present, as alternately idealised and/or denigrated aspects of the self. These trends permeate across socio-cultural divides and the political spectrum – underpinning phenomena as apparently divergent as free-market fundamentalism, certain forms of anti-capitalism, and contemporary identity and victim politics of both nominal right and left: movements that have more emotional and intellectual underpinnings in common than their proponents may care to admit. The contrast between liberal progressiveness and post-truth populism ignores the inter-relationship of these phenomena and begs the question of those powerful subjectivist and relativistic trends amongst sections of radical and "progressive" opinion that have long sought to problematise the very notion of truth. This book links these phenomena to contemporary social defences against facing limitation, loss, and internal conflict. More specifically it argues that in a pseudo-therapeutic culture preoccupied with narratives of victimhood, the losses associated with "traditional" manufacturing and its attendant associational cultures have neither been acknowledged nor mourned.

Everything is Permitted, Restrictions Still Apply will appeal to all readers interested in history, politics, and socio-cultural analysis, and in new ways of thinking about contemporary issues. It will be of particular interest to researchers applying a psycho-social perspective on contemporary conflict and to a psychoanalytically informed readership. (amazon)

Mark Rothko, one of the greatest painters of the twentieth century, was born in the Jewish Pale of Settlement in 1903. He immigrated to the United States at age ten, taking with him his Talmudic education and his memories of pogroms and persecutions in Russia. His integration into American society began with a series of painful experiences, especially as a student at Yale, where he felt marginalized for his origins and ultimately left the school. The decision to become an artist led him to a new phase in his life. Notebooks for an Ethics (Jean-Paul Sartre, 1992)


A major event in the history of twentieth-century thought, Notebooks for a Ethics is Jean-Paul Sartre's attempt to develop an ethics consistent with the profound individualism of his existential philosophy.

In the famous conclusion to Being and Nothingness, Sartre announced that he would devote his next philosophical work to moral problems. Although he worked on this project in the late 1940s, Sartre never completed it to his satisfaction, and it remained unpublished until after his death in 1980. Presented here for the first time in English, the Notebooks reveal Sartre at his most productive, crafting a masterpiece of philosophical reflection that can easily stand alongside his other great works.

Sartre grapples anew here with such central issues as "authenticity" and the relation of alienation and freedom to moral values. Exploring fundamental modes of relating to the Other—among them violence, entreaty, demand, appeal, refusal, and revolt—he articulates the necessary transition from individualism to historical consciousness. This work thus forms an important bridge between the early existentialist Sartre and the later Marxist social thinker of the Critique of Dialectical Reason

Jean-Paul Sartre (1906-1980) was offered, but declined, the Nobel Prize for literature in 1964. There is much work to be done, for example, in developing the ethical aspects of Sartre’s theory of authenticity in light of the posthumous publication of his Notebooks for an Ethics (Sartre 1983b, 1992). ... 美中貿易戰日前僵持不下,中國股市大幅下瀉,人民幣兌美元匯率屢屢破新低,中國央行周日再次降準以釋放更多銀行資金。中國金融學者發文警告,中國經濟泡沫破滅的時刻已經到來。


  這篇題為《中國定向降準抵禦已到的明斯基時刻》的文章作者是國內金融學者賀江兵。他著有《金融的真相》和《經濟的假象》等書,並曾任《華夏時報》金融部主任。因為他無法在國內社媒上發布這篇文章,他轉而向自由亞洲電台記者提供了全文。

  本周日,中國央行宣布今年年內的第三次定向降準,此舉會釋放約7000億元的資金,支持負債企業“債轉股”項目和小微企業融資。賀江兵以央行再次降準為切入點,在文中開門見山地寫道:“中國存不存在明斯基時刻問題?當然存在。”他表示,這個時刻已經來臨。

  明斯基時刻(Minsky Moment)是以美國經濟學家海曼•明斯基(Hyman Minsky)命名的,描述的是資產價值突然崩潰的時刻,也就是大家熟知的經濟泡沫的破裂。明斯基認為在經濟長期穩定發展之下,逐步顯現的金融投機主義可能會導致國有債務增加、杠杆比率(公司負債和收入比率)上升,進而引爆一場金融危機和後續漫長的去杠杆化風險周期。

  賀江兵表示,他並沒有誇大中國經濟岌岌可危的現狀。就近期劇烈的市場反應來看,泡沫破裂才剛剛開始。就在此時,中共內部的政策性分歧已暴露無遺,就連國家領導人習近平自己都不知如何是好。

  “中國老百姓把他(的政策)總結成‘政左經右’,但這是胡扯。就說是既要資本主義市場經濟的好處又要專製的好處,這怎麽可能呢?他天天都是‘既要,又要,還要…’”

  他在文中列舉了中國經濟的三大定時炸彈。首當其衝的就是國際社會頻頻關注的中國內債問題。央行資產負債表顯示,截至201612月,中國內債達到了244萬億元,債務集中於家庭、金融和非金融企業。中國國債僅為10萬億元,相比內債可以忽略不計。國家統計局數據顯示,中國2016年的國民生產總值僅為約75萬億元,這意味著中國的總負債率逼近350%。在金融學中,這個百分比越小表明債務越健康,而超過200%就已經值得警惕了。

  賀江兵還提到了中國樓市的瘋狂泡沫。他引用了中國建行董事長田國立本月在陸家嘴論壇上的發言說,中國房地產總值的估計數字從40多萬億元到400多萬億元不等。無論如何,這些已經是天文數字了。

  賀紅兵補充,中國房價泡沫正在破裂。據北京青年報報道,去年北京房價高點明顯下調,尤其是二手房,價格下跌多達20%

  他認為,人民幣本幣也存在大量泡沫。央行數據顯示,今年3月,人民幣廣義貨幣供應量高達約174萬億元。這個數字比美元和歐元的供應量之和還要高。他說,這表明人民幣發行過多已是不爭的事實。

  “現在你(中國政府)非要和美國挑戰,但你的泡沫不支持(貿易戰的角逐)。你非要往(美國總統)特朗普的鋼針上碰,那你碰唄。現在很多人說這是雞蛋碰石頭,那不對。那是泡沫碰鋼針。”

  另外,網上近日流傳了一份由中共中央批準成立的國家金融與發展實驗室發布的內部報告,題為《警惕出現金融恐慌》。報告指出,“今年以來,債券違約、流動性緊張、匯率下行和股市下瀉等相繼發生,且有愈演愈烈之勢,加之美聯儲加息以及中美貿易衝突呈長期化和高度不確定性,我們認為,目前中國極有可能出現金融恐慌。”作為政府智庫的觀點,該報告遭到外泄,並在搜狐財經頻道發布,但很快就被刪除。

  美籍經濟評論人士梅鳳傑認為,中國經濟已是窮途末路。近期人民幣匯率下行和滬指跌破3000點大關表明,不光國際市場對中國在貿易戰中缺乏信心,就連中國老百姓也覺得政府這下黔驢技窮了。

  “特朗普總統這次對中國的強硬製裁的時候,幾乎是打亂了他們(中國領導人)所有的構想。中國大陸現在可以看得出來,應對起來不僅沒有手段性,而且(政府)現在所做的一切行為都非常愚蠢。它明知道這個事情不行,但是還硬要去做。它又非常倉促,沒有任何的預案在進行。”


  另據官方消息,中國財政部將於今年在境外發行100億人民幣國債和30億美元的主權債券。有輿論認為,這是中央財政吃緊的表現之一。

The For-Itself is suddenly compromised. I open my hands, I want to let go of the slimy, and it sticks to me, it draws me, it sucks at me. Its mode of being is neither the reassuring inertia of the solid nor a dynamism like that in water which is exhausted in fleeing from me. It is a soft, yielding action, a moist and feminine sucking…. Slime is the revenge of the in-itself. A sickly-sweet, feminine revenge which will be symbolized on another level by the quality “sugary.” … A sugary-sliminess is the ideal of the slimy; it symbolizes the sugary death of the For-itself (like that of the wasp which sinks into the jam and drowns in it)… But at the same time the slimy is myself, by the very fact that I outline an appropriation of the slimy substance. That sucking of the slimy which I feel on my hands outlines a kind of continuity of the slimy substance in myself. These long, soft strings of substance which fall from me to the slimy body (when, for example, I plunge my hand into it and then pull it out again) symbolize a rolling off of myself in the slime… [Slime] transcends all distincions betwen psychic and physical, between the brute existent and the meanings of the world; it is a possible meaning of being. The first experience which the infant can have with the slimy enriches him psychologically and morally; he will not need to reach adulthood to discover the kind of sticky baseness which we figuratively name “slimy”; it is there near him in the very sliminess of honey or of glue.
