A chain of flaws can be traced through all phenomena, natural and human. We see impending and actual failures in individual lives, in marriages, careers, in religion, education, psychotherapy, business, nations, and in entire civilizations. Depressive Realism argues that people with mild-to-moderate depression have a more accurate perception of reality than non-depressives.
Depressive realism is a worldview of human existence that is essentially negative, and which challenges assumptions about the value of life and the institutions claiming to answer life’s problems. Drawing from central observations from various disciplines, this book argues that a radical honesty about human suffering might initiate wholly new ways of thinking, in everyday life and in clinical practice for mental health, as well as in academia.
Divided into sections that reflect depressive realism as a worldview spanning all academic disciplines, chapters provide examples from psychology, psychotherapy, philosophy and more to suggest ways in which depressive realism can critique each discipline and academia overall. This book challenges the tacit hegemony of contemporary positive thinking, as well as the standard assumption in cognitive behavioural therapy that depressed individuals must have cognitive distortions. This book foregrounds the life struggles of an individual, Brenda, in such a way that argument and theoretical exploration arise organically out of experience. The "frustration" of the title is traced to avoidant attachment - pretending not to need others. In Brenda this is associated with a body-energy pattern that is both over-charged and over-contained, generating a self-frustrating process. Such a repressive defence works against her, so that she experiences her life as dry, soulless, and uncreative. A variety of existential difficulties are traced to how such core developmental issues interact with our socio-cultural environment. that exist between phenomenology, Buddhism, and psychotherapy. These three

Depression and the Erosion of the Self in Late Modernity: The Lesson of Icarus (Barbara Dowds, not released yet)
Depression is not a disease of the brain, a genetic disability or even a mood disorder. Rather, shutdown, numbness or sadness are non-pathological adaptations to adverse childhood and adult environments. This challenging book thus understands depression as a wise response to an unliveable situation. It can teach us what is wrong with our lives and what we must learn in order to go beyond symptom relief and reconnect to our most fundamental needs, relational, existential and spiritual. Because moods shape how we engage with our outer and inner worlds, they underlie all human behaviour. If the sociocultural world is toxic or frustrates our core needs, we will withdraw to protect ourselves. Those who have encountered a non-facilitating environment in childhood will be even more sensitive to adult stresses, since their self-organisation is fragile and non-resilient. As depression is so complex, understanding it demands an integrative approach. Adopting a biopsychosocial perspective with an environmentalist emphasis, this study articulates a variety of levels: experiential, psychodynamic, developmental, evolutionary, neuroscientific, genetic and societal. In particular the impacts of the social changes in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries are invoked in an attempt to explain the ongoing escalation of depression worldwide. (amazon)
About the Author
Barbara Dowds had a first career in science as a researcher at the University of California and TCD, and later as a senior lecturer in molecular genetics at Maynooth University, Ireland. She completed her therapy training in 2002, and then began to work as a humanistic and integrative psychotherapist. Barbara taught on various psychotherapy trainings between 2003 and 2014, and was on the editorial board of Eisteach, the journal of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, for seven years. She is the author of Beyond the Frustrated Self as well as numerous articles. 一、隨著習近平的權力不斷疊加,中國的高層政治風險也在增加,所有賭注都押在一個人身上。他推翻年齡與任期限制,無異於告訴政敵:「所有的規定都是可以翻盤的,只要鬥垮習近平,你也可以這麼做!」因此,未來只要習近平對政局掌控力下降,必將引發激烈的權力鬥爭。
二、當軍改把解放軍改造成巨大的黷武機器之際,當前中國領導的文人層,除習近平以外,無人有軍隊經驗,一旦他面臨人身危險,中國陷入軍人干政的機會非常高。
三、龐大官僚體系面對強人統治,花在表態忠誠的時間,將遠遠多於創新,拖延與往上請示成為官場存活的天條。原本就大小事都管的習近平,肯定抓得更緊,凡事只要沒有習近平展現必達的決心與命令,行政體系必淪為一攤死水,效率不彰。
四、任何幻想對中國能以拖待變,或以西方價值進行滲透,甚至盼望他能自行實施開明改革的樂觀看法,已注定幻滅。未來中國不但要切斷西方伸進來的手,還要向外強勢推銷中國模式的王朝價值體系。
五、棒打出頭鳥,在習近平確定要終身統領中國後,美國政商界內逐漸興起中美衝突將無法避免的看法,美國總統川普冷待習近平的特使,其經濟大總管中共政治局委員劉鶴,國會還選擇其到訪時,無異議通過允許台灣總統訪美的《台灣旅行法》,還準備對中國進口鋼鋁材課重稅,隨著中美兩強相爭,夾縫中的台日韓如何穩住翹翹板的兩邊,考驗各國國安團隊。
