I encountered a living example of Williams’s
insight in Davecat, a 42-year-old man who lives with three dolls (Figure 3.1).
He considers himself an iDollator and a robosexual. In psychiatric terms,
Davecat is suffering from perversion and would be diagnosed as an agalmatophile
or a pygmalion, a lover of dolls, statues, mannequins, or other stand-ins for a
woman. He has lived with his first doll, Sidore, for nearly 15 years and refers
to her as “the Missus.” Unlike Jack, Davecat has never been my patient;
however, he generously allowed me to interview him in his home outside Detroit,
Michigan, for seven hours over a two-day period. One of the primary
observations I made during the time I spent with Davecat and his dolls was how
Davecat’s dolls have become REAL as a result of the loving care he bestows on
them and the insistence of his imagination.
