When he was thirty-seven he was awarded a
scholarship from the Ministry of Education to study under the famous French
philosopher, Henri Bergson (1859–1941). However, Bergson's ill health made this
impossible, so he was allowed to switch to Martin Heidegger, now at Heidelberg
University. At that time, Heidegger was lecturing on Nietzsche, and, during his
stay, Nishitani himself delivered a lecture comparing Nietzsche's Zarathustra
to Meister Eckhart's writings. (1743/3699)
