俄蘭城的夜

其後山農以事系留京獄，先生盡鬻田產脫之。侍養於獄六年，不赴廷試。先生歸田後，身已老，山農至，先生不離左右，一茗一果，必親進之。諸孫以為勞，先生曰：「吾師非汝輩所能事也。」

先生既中式，十年不赴殿試。一日謁東廓於書院，坐定，問曰：「十年專工問學，可得聞乎？」對曰：「只悟得無字。」東廓曰：「如此尚是門外人。」時山農在座，聞之，出而恚曰：「不遠千里到此，何不打點幾句好話，卻倒了門面。」聞者為之失笑。 (參政羅近溪先生汝芳明儒學案卷三十四泰州學案三)

息壤是中國古代傳說中的一種神物，所謂「息壤」就是自己可以自動生長的土壤。^[1]用「息壤」修築的堤壩，洪水長一米，堤壩也自動長一米。^[2]

方氏《通雅》：「息壤，坌土也。」漢代高誘註：「息土不耗減，掘之益多，故以填洪水。」《淮南子·地形訓》謂：「禹乃以息土填洪水。」

息壤的傳說仍被保留，歷代史不絕書。一說荊州古城留下的一處息壤遺蹟，凡遇亢旱，發掘其地，必致雷雨滂沱。
