My first objective in writing this book is to trace the concept of intersubjectivity from its historical developments in several disciplines, each viewing human interaction through different frames.

The fields of neuroscience, philosophy, semiotics, and infant research offer substantial, but in many ways incompatible, contributions to understanding human relationships.

Their varied methods and findings have influenced psychoanalysis, however, resulting in what often seems a hodge-podge of inconsistent ideas about what actually takes place in treatment.
