A few years ago, a young man in his late teens came in for a therapy session. The previous September, Craig had left home to attend his first year of college, but by mid-December, something had gone haywire. His parents were called by the dean and told that Craig had not been going to classes for weeks. They were also informed by the resident advisor that five days earlier, Craig had locked himself in his room, thrown all of his and his roommate’s possessions out of the window, and was listening to the same song 24 hours a day. His parents raced to campus to find him in the middle of an acute psychotic episode.
