William Empson (1906-1984)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Empson

His best-known work is his first, Seven Types of Ambiguity, published in 1930. (accessible via scribd)
Jonathan Bate has written that the three greatest English literary critics of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries are Johnson, Hazlitt and Empson, "not least because they are the funniest".

Seven types

  1. The first type of ambiguity is the metaphor, that is, when two things are said to be alike which have different properties. This concept is similar to that of metaphysical conceit.
  2. Two or more meanings are resolved into one. Empson characterizes this as using two different metaphors at once.
  3. Two ideas that are connected through context can be given in one word simultaneously.
  4. Two or more meanings that do not agree but combine to make clear a complicated state of mind in the author.
  5. When the author discovers his idea in the act of writing. Empson describes a simile that lies halfway between two statements made by the author.
  6. When a statement says nothing and the readers are forced to invent a statement of their own, most likely in conflict with that of the author.
  7. Two words that within context are opposites that expose a fundamental division in the author's mind.

The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, by Joel Bakan, Free Press, 2003

The inspiration for the film that won the 2004 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for Best Documentary, The Corporation contends that the corporation is created by law to function much like a psychopathic personality, whose destructive behavior, if unchecked, leads to scandal and ruin.

Over the last 150 years the corporation has risen from relative obscurity to become the world’s dominant economic institution. Eminent Canadian law professor and legal theorist Joel Bakan contends that today's corporation is a pathological institution, a dangerous possessor of the great power it wields over people and societies.

In this revolutionary assessment of the history, character, and globalization of the modern business corporation, Bakan backs his premise with the following observations:

-The corporation’s legally defined mandate is to pursue relentlessly and without exception its own economic self-interest, regardless of the harmful consequences it might cause to others.
-The corporation’s unbridled self-interest victimizes individuals, society, and, when it goes awry, even shareholders and can cause corporations to self-destruct, as recent Wall Street scandals reveal.
-Governments have freed the corporation, despite its flawed character, from legal constraints through deregulation and granted it ever greater authority over society through privatization.

But Bakan believes change is possible and he outlines a far-reaching program of achievable reforms through legal regulation and democratic control.

Featuring in-depth interviews with such wide-ranging figures as Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman, business guru Peter Drucker, and cultural critic Noam Chomsky, The Corporation is an extraordinary work that will educate and enlighten students, CEOs, whistle-blowers, power brokers, pawns, pundits, and politicians alike. why bion left london for LA in 1965 at the age of seventy?

yes, why?

yet, why not?

No one is certain why, nor did Bion really divulge why he had taken this major relocation. When asked, he would characteristically answer, half in jest, "I was so loaded down with honours in London that I nearly sank without a trace."

Rumours began to abound (mainly from London, sources confidential) that, although he was highly respected for his many previous brilliant contributions, particularly the earlier ones on psychosis and on theories of thinking, which had been highly innovative extensions of Melanie Klein's work, his newer independent and creative ideas were held by many to be too "undisciplined" (vide supra), too radical, and too "mystical". O was first published in Transformation in 1965 (p. 13) and then in Attention and Interpretation in 1970 (p. 14 et al). (ibid, 4667/5693)

Gustave Le Bon (1841 -1931)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustave_Le_Bon

  • Psychologie des Foules (1895) The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind (1896)

One of the most influential works of social psychology in history, The Crowd was highly instrumental in creating this field of study by analyzing, in detail, mass behavior. The book had a profound impact not only on Freud but also on such twentieth-century masters of crowd control as Hitler and Mussolini — both of whom may have used its observations as a guide to stirring up popular passions. In the author's words, "The masses have never thirsted after the truth. Whoever can supply them with illusions is easily their master; whoever attempts to destroy their illusions is always their victim."

Although the volume focuses on crowd psychology, it is also brilliantly instructive on the effects of the generally accepted beliefs of a nation's citizenry on the processes of history. Among the topics covered here are general characteristics and mental unity of the crowd; the crowd's sentiments and morality; its ideas, reasoning power, and imagination; opinions and beliefs of crowds and the means used by leaders to persuade; classification of crowds, including criminal and electrical assemblages, as well as the functioning of criminal juries and parliamentary assemblies.

A must-read volume for students of history, sociology, law, and psychology, The Crowd will also be invaluable to politicians, statesmen, investors, and marketing managers. "Any study of crowd behavior, popular psychology, fascism, etc. would do well to begin with Le Bon's work." — Anson Rabinbach, Professor of History, Princeton University. (amazon)

Explorations of the Psychoanalytic Mystics (Contemporary Psychoanalytic Studies), by Dan Merkur, Rodopi, 2010 (accessible via fju)

The roster of psychoanalyst mystics nevertheless includes eminent analysts from several major schools within psychoanalysis: Otto Rank (1884-1939), Erich Fromm (1900-1980), Marion Milner (1900-1998), D. W. Winnicott (1896-1971), Heinz Kohut (1913-1981), Hans W. Loewald (1906-1993), Wilfred R. Bion (1897-1979), and, among living writers, James S. Grotstein, Neville Symington, and Michael Eigen. (Merkur, 2012, preface)

After twenty years as an academic student of religion who was interested in applied psychoanalysis, I trained as a clinician in 2000-2005. One result of entering clinical practice has been a radical re-orientation to psychoanalytic literature.

As an academic I appreciated the literature as a body of theories. Now I read the same texts as efforts to verbalize clinical observations that anyone may confirm (or disconfirm) independently. I no longer read psychoanalytic theorists only for their internal coherence. I now read them also for their correspondence to my experiences with my patients. (ibid, preface)

Recent cross-cultural studies count as mystical not only the unitive and nothingness experiences of Christian contemplatives, Jewish Kabbalists, Muslim Sufis, Hindu yogins, and Buddhist meditators, but also the interior dialogues of prophets, the visionary states of vision questers, shamans, Taoists, and others, and the motor compulsions of spirit mediums and the possessed. (ibid, p. 1)

"Cry Soldier Cry"

Cold wind in the morning
A telegram arrives
Arriving with no warning
Another mother cries
Husbands, sons and brothers
Hailed the call to war
Blinded by the others
The promise - one for all
What's it all in aid of
Obeying the command
Cold and tired and hungry
Dying for some land
Why don't you cry, soldier, cry
Another letter - you should know better
Cry, soldier, cry
There will be sorrow - until tomorrow
So cry, soldier, cry
The fear and all the sadness
Of what it has become
In this world of madness
Another soldier gone
Salute the highest honour
The folding of the flag
Finally the end is
Another bodybag
And all the time your comrades
Their backs against the wall
A band of brothers fighting
One by one they fall
