In 1939 France declared war on Germany after its invasion and occupation of Poland. As France mobilized its troops, Marc Bloch left his position at the Sorbonne and took up his reserve status as a captain in the French Army at the age of 52. He was encouraged at the time by colleagues both in France and abroad to leave the country. He said it was his personal obligation to stand for the moral imperative.

"I was born in France, I have drunk the waters of her culture. I have made her past my own. I breathe freely only in her climate, and I have done my best, with others, to defend her interests."

His memoir of the first days of World War II, Strange Defeat, written in 1940 but not published until 1946.

The Historian's Craft (French: Apologie pour l'histoire ou Métier d'historien, 1949) is a book by Marc Bloch and first published in English in 1953 (New York: Knopf) (it was the first of his works to be translated into English). At that stage he was not as well known in the English-speaking world as he was to be in the 1960s where his works on feudal society and rural history were published.

The book was written in 1941 and 1942. Bloch joined the French Resistance prior to its completion.

Was it Joseph Cornell's dossiers on ballerinas and artists that first proposed the model of the archive as a creative storehouse, a vehicle for the ordering of chaotic fragments? Over the past 30 years, successive generations have taken wide-ranging approaches to archives, most of them (like Cornell) concentrating on photographic and filmic collections. Organized and written by renowned scholar and ICP Adjunct Curator Okwui Enwezor, and taking its title from Jacques Derrida's book of the same name, Archive Fever gathers leading contemporary artists who use archival materials in the fabrication of their work. As Derrida notes, the Greek etymology of "archive" connotes both "commencement" and "commandment," implying that authority is as much at stake as authenticity. 在最近北京驱赶外来人口的争议中，“低端人口”是最让人脊骨发凉一个说法。尽管官媒和北京市政府争辩这并非官方说辞，但几天来社交媒体流传出的北京区一级政府部门的报告和文件中，这一说法却多次出现。其实“低端人口”也好，中性一些的“多余人口”，“流动人口”也好，不管当局采用什么称呼，都难以抹杀几十万人在严寒中无家可归或者黯然离去的悲凉。中国的“低端人口”都是谁？当一个政府将自己的人民分为三六九等，个人的尊严和价值还有存在的空间吗？在未来几十年，“低端”群体对于权利，尊严和机会的追求，可能如何影响中国的政治稳定和社会和谐？

　　嘉宾：旅美经济学者秦伟平先生; 中国经济学者胡星斗教授；北京独立时事评论员吴强博士。

　　秦伟平指出，“低端人口”的说法很难让人接受，是赤裸裸地把人群分为三六九等。当然，社会学里的确存在不同阶层的划分，比方底层、中层、上层。中共标榜无产阶级是主人，实际是中国5%的精英阶层才是真正的主人。北京这次驱逐几十万所谓低端，其实真正的原因公众看不到。中国有2.8亿人口是赤贫，就是每天收入不足2美元，是真正低端。城市务工人口大约有5、6亿，他们奉献了青春、血汗获得微薄的收入，没有任何社会保障，是当局认为的不稳定因素。经济发展时期官方称他们是新市民，经济下滑没有就业机会时，当局害怕他们闹事于是一赶了之。

　　秦伟平说，中国经济变革之后，草根流民阶层在原籍没有发展机会没有未来，于是迁徙到大城市，但同样面临生活的艰辛。他们在多年付出后获得了些许金钱，但是没有养老保障没有医疗保险。政府所谓清理低端人口其实只是表象，真正的原因是，这些人口是一股巨大的社会能量。中国现在的环境有别于20年前的经济增长期，现在的经济是强弩之末。这点百姓不知道，但是当局了解。只要不继续印制钞票和继续给经济输血，经济就危在旦夕。全国几亿草民在城市虽然是无产者，但是他们有眼界，有组织能力，有社会关系，一旦经济危机全面爆发，他们没有饭吃，在居住的城市很容易引发危机。这样的情况让政府恐惧。政府要在经济全面倒下之前的节点上，让危险人口回流。因此我预测驱赶点端人口的举措全国各大城市都会效仿。

　　秦伟平称，中共社会奉行的是社会达尔文主义，要结果而不要手段，为自己的目的践踏他人。实际上，当局与自己的倡导依法治国背道而驰；北京的清理手段无论从社会制度、从人权和人文关怀层面来说，都是丛林法则。其实，上海的类似行动早已开始，通过调高房租来逼走所谓低端人口。值得注意的是，现在离春节只有两个月，为什么当局连两个月的宽限都不给？蔡奇是个懂宣传的人，知道舆论的后果，所以并非他选择授人以柄，而是不得已而为之，必须提前采取措施，不能再等，所以强制。也许中共认为在六个月到一年的时间内经济可能断层，如果大批人突然失业生活无以为继的话，他们给当局的威胁显而易见。现在他们还有口饭吃，所以即便被驱赶也还不会造反。如果没有了饭碗，估计当局开枪也打不走。这是当局无法说出口的理由。我认为不光是低端人口，高端人口也将被危及。一旦危机爆发，中产阶级也将被重创，可能财产蒸发，被打回原型。

　　胡星斗说，本次北京大兴区发生火灾之后，地方政府相当重视也采取了很多措施，以减轻城市压力和减少事故。应该说，政府用意并非不好，但是效果不佳。北京的做法缺乏人文关怀和法治精神，也与“自由、平等、公正、法治”的社会主义核心价值观相违背。“低端人口”这个名称本身就是侮辱；报道上说的北大学生毕业卖猪肉，也会被算作“低端人口”而被驱赶。应该说，北京作为政治中心要驱逐低端产业是有道理的，但是，控制人口要合理、合法、符合人道精神，应该通过市场调节来实现，而不是以强压弱来强行实施。

　　胡星斗认为，所谓的低端人口虽然长期居住城市并且为城市做贡献，却没有城市人的权利。在当局眼里，他们挑战政府的稳定。我认为，所谓低端产业人口其实是被社会抛弃的人群，他们不仅仅是弱势，而且无法从制度上融入城市，但同时也无法回到农村。因为农村没有了土地，也没有了活干，子女更是不习惯。所以，他们既不是市民也不是农民。按理说，这些生活在北京的所谓低端为社会做了贡献，北京应该感谢他们，现在反而被逼走。他们做了城市最辛苦、最肮脏的工作，却得不到公民的权利。毛时代用强制手段赶走知识青年到农村是如出一辙，当时也是为了社会稳定。现在的政府把“流民”赶回农村，同样是为了北京的安全。不过，这种思维不符合现代文明标准，就像朝鲜首都平壤设置层层关卡不让外地人进入一样。难怪有人说，排华运动现在是中国人自己排自己了。

　　胡星斗说，中国社会现在有普遍的仇富仇官的紧张情绪。政府应该在解决仇恨方面有所作为，但不是使用北京的处理手法。这么多人在寒风中度过夜晚，这引发底层弱势的极大愤慨，也引发社会的巨大同情。这体现中国官员耀武扬威、欺压百姓的思维，也反映权力缺乏制约的现状。我特别要强调的是，中国不能乱，中国应该走出千年王朝暴力更替的血腥循环。这也正是毛泽东说过的，只有民主才能结束这样的暴力更替。政府要守法，外来人口都是公民，都受到宪法保护。当法律不能保护弱势群体权益时，高端人口的正当权益也会被侵害。希望政府牢记社会利益，不是政府眼前利益，把人民利益放在心中。

　　胡星斗说，有分析说，中国现在是社会达尔文主义，我认为是马基雅维利主义，为了社会发展好像可以牺牲多数弱势群体。其实，发展目的是为了广大民众，不为少数人的利益。弱势群体的生存状态是一个国家文明程度的体现。欧美国家穷人的标准是中国的20多倍。中国不仅要重视经济效率更要重视社会公平，我也呼吁过要开展平权，来逐渐解决公平问题。

　　吴强表示，中国的所谓低端人口只能有贡献而没有权利。我认为，他们是中国的新流民阶层。同意两位的评论，他们并不是所谓低端人口，这种分类败坏政治伦理的体现，是对人民错误分类，是陈腐观念的可耻应用。我曾经进行过全国流动人口调查，发现改革以来，中国有一个二、三亿农民工为主体的、庞大的新流民阶层，他们与中国中产阶级的利益休戚相关。这些人的共同特点是，非正式就业、没有稳定的合同、没有医疗保险、没有稳定住所。这些人他们由于工作和生活不稳定，一方面是城市最有活力的部分，一方面也对危机中的当局构成不安全感。

　　吴强说，中共建政以来，从来没有停止过对社会阶层的野蛮整治。1949年以来三番五次清理阶级以及相关分子，比方三反五反，反右，文革，直到红卫兵被利用参与文革后被下乡以完成对城市的净化，然后就是83年的严打，也是驱逐低端人口。现在的大兴现象也是城市净化的一部分。我们看到，这样的净化行动已经进行了五年。首先是互联网净网，然后是文艺界反三俗，现在是在十九大提出美好生活蓝图的形势下，对城市中所谓不符合美好生活画面的部分加以净化。

　　吴强表示，我不同意中共是因为可能发生经济危机而驱赶不稳定人口的说法。我认为，实际的原因是最高领导个由于人权力膨胀，丧失了对形势的判断。过去几年对社会异议的打压成功了，包括民权团体、维权律师、活动人士等，感到权力所向披靡，所以在城市管理上可以激进行事，只是没想到国际社会和公民社会的反弹如此强烈。

Richard Ellmann recounts an amusing anecdote told him by Beckett about one such session of dictation. During the dictation there was a knock on the door. Joyce said, ‘Come in.’ Beckett had not noticed the knock, so he put Joyce’s words down in the text. When Joyce found out later, he said, ‘Let it stand.’

Samuel Beckett's brilliance as a dramatist--as the creator of Waiting for Godot, Krapp's Last Tape, and that despairing pas de deux Endgame--has tended to overshadow his gifts as a novelist. Yet he's unmistakably one of the great fiction writers of our century. As a young man he took dictation (literally) from James Joyce, and absorbed everything that myopic maestro had to offer when it came to Anglo-Irish prosody. Still, Beckett's instincts would ultimately steer him away from Joyce's delirious play with high and low diction, toward a more concentrated, even compulsive style.

His earlier novels, like Murphy or Watt, give us a taste of what was to come. But Beckett truly hit his stride with a trilogy of early-1950s masterpieces: Molloy, Malone Dies, The Unnamable. Here he dispenses with all the customary props of contemporary fiction--including exposition, plot, and increasingly, paragraphs--and turns his attention to consciousness itself. Nobody has ever evoked the pain of existence, or the steady slide toward nonexistence, with such poetic, garrulous accuracy. And once you've attuned yourself to the epistemological vaudeville of Beckett's prose, he turns out to be the funniest writer on the planet--ever.

None of the three entries in the trilogy is exactly amenable to summary. It's fair to say, though, that Molloy is the easiest to read, with at least a bare-bones narrative and an abundance of comical set pieces. In one famous episode, the narrator spends page after page figuring out how to vary the sucking stones he carries in his pockets:

And while I gazed thus at my stones, revolving interminable martingales all equally defective, and crushing handfuls of sand, so that the sand ran through my fingers and fell back on the strand, yes, while thus I lulled my mind and part of my body, one day suddenly it dawned on the former, dimly, that I might perhaps achieve my purpose without increasing the number of my pockets, or reducing the number of my stones, but simply by sacrificing the principle of trim. The meaning of this illumination, which suddenly began to sing within me, like a verse of Isaiah, or of Jeremiah, I did not penetrate at once, and notably the word trim, which I had never met with, in this sense, long remained obscure.

This nutty ratiocination goes on for much, much longer, until the narrator loses patience and throws the stones away.

And that's a fair encapsulation of Beckett's philosophy: he argues for the essential pointlessness of life--the solitary, wretched splendor of human existence--but does so in a comic rather than a tragic register, which ends up softening or even overpowering the bleakness of his initial premise.

So Malone Dies opens with a typically morbid mood-lifter ("I shall soon be quite dead at last in spite of it all") and then makes endless comedic hay out of Malone's failure to keel over. And by the time we hit The Unnamable, we're forced to wonder whether the narrator actually exists: "I, say I. Unbelieving. Questions, hypotheses, call them that. Keep going, going on, call that going, call that on." Happily, Beckett worried these same questions and hypotheses to the end of his career, with increasingly minimalistic gusto. But he never topped the intensity or linguistic brilliance of this mind-bending three-part invention. --James Marcus (amazon)
