that owl of minerva never did fly up
old hegel said, somewhere, long ago, that china, through its thousands years of "precious" history of successive dynasties, there was ONLY one person who is free, guess what, whose name is the emperor, who owns EVERYTHING, including your life and death, i.e. how you live, how you die, how you think, how you dare not think, how you laugh, how you confess, how you eat, how you starve, how you dream, how you remember, how you forget, they say, when one dies, one's soul weights 21 grams, 21 g x 14 billion = ? kg, tell me, now, feb 26, 2018, am 3:08, sitting in the dark night, you are sure that odd owl has missed the twilight, was shot down, and never did fly up, after all,

High Plains Drifter (Clint Eastwood 1973)
A
mysterious stranger rides out of the desert into the isolated mining town of
Lago, on the shore of a small lake in an unnamed western territory. Three men
follow him into the saloon, taunting him, then follow him to the barbershop.
When they challenge him, he kills all three with little effort. Attractive
townswoman Callie Travers deliberately bumps into him in the street, knocks his
cigar from his mouth, and loudly insults him. He drags her into the livery
stable and rapes her.
That night, in his hotel room, the
Stranger dreams of a man being brutally whipped. Then, in a flashback, Jim
Duncan, a federal marshal, is whipped to death in front of the hotel by outlaws
Stacey Bridges and brothers Dan and Cole Carlin as the citizens look on.
Sheriff Sam Shaw approaches the
Stranger and offers him the job previously held by the men he killed: defending
the town from Bridges and the Carlins, who are about to be released from jail.
He declines. Shaw, in desperation, offers him anything he wants in return. The
Stranger learns that the townspeople were complicit in Duncan's murder; they
hired the outlaws to kill him after he discovered that the town's only source
of income, the mine, was on government land. They then double-crossed the
murderers and turned them in.
Upon learning this, the Stranger
accepts the job, and takes full advantage of the deal. He appoints barbershop
employee Mordecai as sheriff and mayor, and provides an Indian and his children
with supplies at the shopkeeper's expense. He orders the hotel owner and his
guests to vacate the premises, leaving him its sole occupant. When Belding’s
wife Sarah objects, he drags her, kicking and screaming, into her bedroom. The
next morning, Sarah tells the Stranger that Duncan cannot rest in peace,
because he is buried in an unmarked grave outside of town.
The Stranger instructs the
townspeople in defensive tactics, but they clearly lack the skills or courage
for the job. He also orders that every building in town be painted blood red.
Then, without explanation, he mounts his horse and rides out of town, pausing
to replace "Lago" on the town sign with "Hell".
Meanwhile, Bridges and his gang are
on their way to Lago. The Stranger harasses them with dynamite and long-range
rifle fire, leaving them to ponder the identity of their attacker. Returning to
Lago, the Stranger inspects the preparations—town painted red, townsmen with
rifles stationed on rooftops, picnic tables laden with food and drink, and a
big "WELCOME" banner overhead—then he remounts and departs again.
The Bridges gang arrives and easily
overcomes the inept resistance of the townspeople. Bridges shoots several of
the civic leaders who double-crossed them. By nightfall the town is in flames,
and the terrified citizens are huddled in the saloon. A mysterious sound is
heard in the street; when Cole Carlin walks outside to investigate, everyone
listens in horror as he is whipped to death. Dan Carlin is found dead too,
hanging from another whip. At last the Stranger reveals himself, beats Bridges
to the draw, and kills him.
On his way out of town the following
morning, the Stranger pauses at the cemetery as Mordecai is finishing a new
grave marker. "I never did know your name", Mordecai says. "Yes,
you do", the Stranger replies. As he rides past a bewildered Mordecai into
the desert, the writing on the new headstone is revealed: Marshal Jim
Duncan—Rest in Peace.

The Sacrifice (Swedish: Offret) (Andrei Tarkovsky.1986)
The film
opens on the birthday of Alexander (Erland Josephson),
an actor who gave up the stage to work as a journalist, critic, and lecturer on
aesthetics. He lives in a beautiful house with his actress wife Adelaide (Susan Fleetwood),
stepdaughter Marta (Filippa Franzén), and young son, "Little Man",
who is temporarily mute due to a throat operation. Alexander and Little Man
plant a tree by the seaside, when Alexander's friend Otto, a part-time postman,
delivers a birthday card to him. When Otto asks,
Alexander mentions that his relationship with God is "nonexistent".
After Otto leaves, Adelaide and Victor, a medical doctor and a close family
friend who performed Little Man's operation, arrive at the scene and offer to
take Alexander and Little Man home in Victor's car. However, Alexander prefers
to stay behind and talk to his son. In his monologue, Alexander first recounts
how he and Adelaide found this lovely house near the sea by accident, and how
they fell in love with the house and surroundings, but then enters a bitter
tirade against the state of modern man. As Tarkovsky wrote, Alexander is weary
of "the pressures of change, the discord in his family, and his
instinctive sense of the threat posed by the relentless march of
technology"; in fact, he has "grown to hate the emptiness of human
speech".
The family, as well as Victor and
Otto, gather at Alexander's house for the celebration. Their maid Maria leaves,
while nurse-maid Julia stays to help with the dinner. People comment on Maria's
odd appearances and behavior. The guests chat inside the house, where Otto
reveals that he is a student of paranormal phenomena, a collector of
"inexplicable but true incidences." Just when the dinner is almost
ready, the rumbling noise of low-flying jet fighters interrupts them, and soon
after, as Alexander enters, a news program announces the beginning of what
appears to be all-out war, and possibly nuclear
holocaust. In despair, he vows to God to sacrifice all he loves, even
Little Man, if this may be undone. Otto advises him to slip away and lie with
Maria, who Otto convinces him is a witch, "in the best possible sense".
Alexander takes his gun, leaves a note in his room, escapes the house, and
rides his bike to where she is staying. She is bewildered when he makes his
advances, but when he puts his gun to his temple ("Don't kill us,
Maria"), at which point the jet-fighters' rumblings return, she soothes
him and they consummate while floating above her bed, though Alexander's
reaction is ambiguous.
When he awakes the next morning, in
his own bed, everything seems normal. Nevertheless, Alexander sets forth to give
up all he loves and possesses. He tricks the family members and friends into
going for a walk, and sets fire to their house when they are away. As the group
rushes back, alarmed by the fire, Alexander confesses that he set the fire
himself, and furiously runs around. Maria, who until then was not seen that
morning, appears in the fire scene; Alexander tries to approach her, but is
restrained by others. Without explanation, an ambulance appears in the area,
and two paramedics chase Alexander, who appears to have lost control of
himself, and drive off with him. Maria begins to bicycle away, but stops
halfway to observe Little Man watering the tree he and Alexander planted the
day before.[n 1] As
Maria leaves the scene, the "mute" Little Man, lying at the foot of
the tree, speaks his only line, which quotes the opening Gospel of John:
"In the beginning was the Word. Why is that, Papa?"

To understand just one life, you have to swallow
the world. (Salman Rushdie, Midnight’s Children)
To understand the world, you have to swallow just
one life.
Swallow

China's Great Wall of Debt: Shadow Banks, Ghost Cities, Massive Loans, and the End of the Chinese Miracle (Dinny McMahon, 2018-3-13)
China's Great Wall of Debt: Shadow Banks, Ghost Cities, Massive Loans,
and the End of the Chinese Miracle, by Dinny
McMahon, Houghton Mifflin
Harcourt, March 13, 2018 (kindle pre-ordered 2018-2-19)
A stunning inside look at how and why the foundations upon which China has built the world’s second largest economy, have started to crumble.
Over the course of a decade spent reporting on the ground in China as a financial journalist, Dinny McMahon gradually came to the conclusion that the widely held belief in China’s inevitable economic ascent is dangerously wrong.
In this unprecedented deep dive, McMahon shows how, lurking behind the illusion of prosperity, China’s economic growth has been built on a staggering mountain of debt. While stories of newly built but empty cities, white elephant state projects, and a byzantine shadow banking system, have all become a regular fixture in the press in recent years, McMahon goes beyond the headlines to explain how such waste has been allowed to flourish, and why one of the most powerful governments in the world has been at a loss to stop it.
Through the stories of ordinary Chinese citizens, McMahon tries to make sense of the unique—and often bizarre—mechanics of the Chinese economy, whether it be the state’s addiction to appropriating land from poor farmers; or why a Chinese entrepreneur decided it was cheaper to move his yarn factory to South Carolina; or why ambitious Chinese mayors build ghost cities; or why the Chinese bureaucracy was able to stare down Beijing’s attempts to break up the state’s pointless monopoly over the distribution of table salt.
Debt, entrenched vested interests, a frenzy of speculation, and an aging population are all pushing China toward an economic reckoning. China’s Great Wall of Debt unravels an incredibly complex and opaque economy, one whose fortunes—for better or worse—will shape the globe like never before. (amazon)

End of an Era: How China's Authoritarian Revival is Undermining Its Rise (Carl Minzner, 2018-3-1)
End of an Era: How China's Authoritarian Revival is Undermining Its Rise,
by Carl Minzner, Oxford University Press, March 1, 2018 (kindle 2018-2-19)
China's reform era is ending. Core factors that characterized it-political stability, ideological openness, and rapid economic growth-are unraveling.
Since the 1990s, Beijing's leaders have firmly rejected any fundamental reform of their authoritarian one-party political system, even as a decades-long boom has reshaped China's economy and society. On the surface, their efforts have been a success. Political turmoil has toppled former Communist East bloc regimes, internal unrest overtaken Middle East nations, and populist movements risen to challenge established Western democracies. China, in contrast, has appeared a relative haven of stability and growth.
But as Carl Minzner shows, a closer look at China's reform era reveals a different truth. Over the past three decades, a frozen political system has fueled both the rise of entrenched interests within the Communist Party itself, and the systematic underdevelopment of institutions of governance among state and society at large. Economic cleavages have widened. Social unrest has worsened. Ideological polarization has deepened.
Now, to address these looming problems, China's leaders are progressively cannibalizing institutional norms and practices that have formed the bedrock of the regime's stability in the reform era. Technocratic rule is giving way to black-box purges; collective governance sliding back towards single-man rule. The post-1978 era of "reform and opening up" is ending. China is closing down. Uncertainty hangs in the air as a new future slouches towards Beijing to be born. End of an Era explains how China arrived at this dangerous turning point, and outlines the potential outcomes that could result. (amazon)
