Freud and the Émigré: Austrian Émigrés, Exiles and the Legacy of Psychoanalysis in Britain, 1930s–1970s (ed. Elana Shapira, Daniela Finzi, Palgrave Macmillan, 2020-11-8)
This book reconsiders standard narratives regarding Austrian émigrés and exiles to Britain by addressing the seminal role of Sigmund Freud and his writings, and the critical part played by his contemporaries, in the construction of a method promoting humanized relations between individual and society and subjectivity and culture. This anthology presents groundbreaking examples of the manners in which well-known personalities including psychoanalysts Anna Freud and Ernst Kris, sociologist Marie Jahoda, authors Stefan Zweig and Hilde Spiel, film director Berthold Viertel, architect Ernst Freud, and artist Oskar Kokoschka, achieved a greater impact, and contributed to the broadening of British and global cultures, through constructing a psychologically effective language and activating their émigré networks. They advanced a visionary Viennese tradition through political and social engagements and through promoting humanistic perspectives in their scientific, educational and artistic works. (amazon)
Scansion in Psychoanalysis and Art: The Cut in Creation (Art, Creativity, and Psychoanalysis Book Series) (Vanessa Sinclair, Routledge, 2020-11-17)
Scansion in Psychoanalysis and Art examines a strain of artists spanning more than a century, beginning at the dawn of photography and culminating in the discussion of contemporary artists, to illustrate various psychoanalytic concepts by examining artists working in a multitude of mediums.
Drawing on the theories of Sigmund Freud, who applied psychoanalytic methods to art and literature to decipher the meaning and intention of the creator, as well as Jacques Lacan’s dissemination of scansion as a powerful disruption of narrative, the book explores examples of the long and rich relationship between psychoanalysis and the fine arts. Whilst guiding readers through the different artists and their artforms - from painting and music to poetry, collage, photography, film, performance art, technology and body modification - Sinclair interrogates scansion as a generative process often inherent of the act of creation itself.
This is an intriguing book for psychoanalysts, psychologists and creative arts therapists, who wish to explore the generative potential of scansion and the relationship between psychoanalysis and the arts, as well as to artists and art historians interested in a psychoanalytic view of these processes. When Minds Meet: The Work of Lewis Aron (Relational Perspectives Book Series) (ed. Galit Atlas, Routledge, 2020-11-30)
This extraordinary volume offers a sampling of Lewis Aron’s most important contributions to Relational psychoanalysis.
One of the founders of Relational thinking, Aron was an internationally recognized psychoanalyst, sought after teacher, lecturer, and the Director of the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. His pioneering work introduced and revolutionized the concepts of mutuality, the analyst’s subjectivity, and the paradigm of mutual vulnerability in the analytic setting. During the last few years of his life, Aron was exploring the ethical considerations of writing psychoanalytic case histories and the importance of self-reflection and scepticism not only for analysts with their patients, but also as a stance towards the field of psychoanalysis itself. Aron is known for his singular, highly compelling teaching and writing style and for an unparalleled ability to convey complex, often comparative theoretical concepts in a uniquely inviting and approachable way. The reader will encounter both seminal papers on the vision and method of contemporary clinical practice, as well as cutting edge newer writing from the years just before his death. Edited and with a foreword by Galit Atlas, each chapter is preceded by a new introduction by some of the most important thinkers in our field: Jessica Benjamin, Michael Eigen Jay Greenberg, Adrienne Harris, Stephen Hartman Steven Kuchuck, Thomas Ogden, Joyce Slochower, Donnel Stern, Merav Roth, Chana Ullman and Aron himself.
This book will make an important addition to the libraries of experienced clinicians and psychoanalytic scholars already familiar with Aron’s work, as well as students, newer professionals or anyone seeking an introduction to relational psychoanalysis and one of its most stunning, vibrant voices.(amazon)
Theoretical and Clinical Perspectives on Narrative in Psychoanalysis: The Creation of Intimate Fictions (Joye Weisel-Barth, Routledge, 2020-12-30)
This book is of and about psychoanalytic stories. It describes the personal, theoretical, and cultural stories that patients and analysts bring, create, and modify in analytic work. It shows how the joint creation of new life narratives over time results in transformed senses of self and relationship.
Flowing from the tradition of narrative theory, these stories seek to recast the creation of analytic narratives in social contexts and contemporary relational theories. They depict ongoing therapeutic process and heightened interactive events and moments that together expand personal scope and change life directions for both partners in the analytic dyad. Its stories illuminate sometimes difficult and arcane analytic theory, bringing the meanings and utility of theory into living action. They also show how familiar emotions such as love, hate, envy, loneliness and active human values such as empathy, generosity, and good faith function in psychoanalytic interaction. In short, these analytic stories are useful teaching tools. The narrative tales in this book address a wide range of history and emotions in both patients and analyst. The patients, fictionalized characters from a lifetime of analytic practice, are protagonists with backgrounds of trauma, loss, relational and geographical dislocation but also successful adaptations and struggle toward self-development. Some of their stories describe intense short-term work and others long-term analytic relationships. The subjective experience and responses of the analyst are also central parts of the analytic fictions. (amazon)

Talking about Evil: Psychoanalytic, Social, and Cultural Perspectives (Relational Perspectives Book Series) (ed. Rina Lazar, Routledge, 2016)
How can we talk about evil? How can we make sense of its presence all around us? How can we come to terms with the sad fact that our involvement in doing or enabling evil is an interminable aspect of our lives in the world? This book is an attempt to engage these questions in a new way.
Written from within the complicated reality of Israel, the contributors to this book forge a collective effort to think about evil from multiple perspectives. A necessary effort, since psychoanalysis has been slow to account for the existence of evil, while philosophy and the social sciences have tended to neglect its psychological aspects.
The essays collected here join to form a wide canvas on which a portrait of evil gradually emerges, from the Bible, through the enlightenment to the Holocaust; from Kant, through Freud, Klein, Bromberg and Stein to Arendt, Agamben and Bauman; using literature, history, cinema, social theory and psychoanalysis.
Talking about Evil opens up a much needed space for thinking, in itself an antidote to evil. It will be of interest to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and scholars and students of philosophy, social theory and the humanities.(amazon) (accessible via scribd)
The Already Dead: The New Time of Politics, Culture, and Illness (Eric Cazdyn, Duke University Press, 2012)
In The Already Dead, Eric Cazdyn examines the ways that contemporary medicine, globalization, politics, and culture intersect to produce a condition and concept that he names "the new chronic." Cazdyn argues that just as contemporary medicine uses targeted drug therapies and biotechnology to manage rather than cure diseases, global capitalism aims not for resolution but rather for a continual state of crisis management that perpetuates the iniquities of the status quo. Engaging critical theory, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, he explores the ways that crisis affects perceptions of time and denies alternative ways of being and thinking.
To resist the exploitative crisis state, which Cazdyn terms "the global abyss," he posits the concept of "the already dead," a condition in which the subject (medical, political, psychological) has been killed but has yet to die. Embracing this condition, he argues, allows for a revolutionary consciousness open to a utopian future. Woven into Cazdyn's analysis are personal anecdotes about his battle with leukemia and his struggle to obtain Canadian citizenship during his illness. These narratives help to illustrate his systemic critique, one that reconfigures the relationship between politics, capitalism, revolution, and the body. When asked whether he would see a new patient, a psychoanalyst wanted to know if it was an emergency. ‘‘No, the patient’s relatively stable, functional, adjusted—not in crisis,’’ the referring doctor replied. ‘‘Oh no!’’ the analyst exclaimed. ‘‘In that case I better see him right away.’
Being Posthuman: Ontologies of the Future (Zahi Zalloua, Bloomsbury Academic, 2021-1-14)
Posthumanism is both a descriptive and a prescriptive term. Firstly, it registers a shift beginning in the late 1960s and epitomized by Foucault's “the death of Man”. Secondly, it refers to the future and a new relationship with the non-human, along with a different understanding of human exceptionalism.
In Being Posthuman: Ontologies of the Future, Zahi Zalloua interrogates this future and shows that “post-” does not necessarily mean 'after' or that what comes after is more advanced than what has gone before. He pursues this line of inquiry across four distinct, yet interrelated, figures: cyborgs, animals, objects, and racialized and excluded 'others'. These figures disrupt the narrative of the 'human' and its singularity and by reading them together, Zalloua determines that it is only when posthumanist discourse is combined with psychoanalysis that subjectivity can be properly examined. On Resistance: A Philosophy of Defiance (Howard Caygill, Bloomsbury Academic, 2013)
No word is more central to the contemporary political imagination and action than 'resistance'. In its various manifestations - from the armed guerrilla to Gandhian mass pacifist protest, from Wikileaks and the Arab Spring to the global eruption and violent repression of the Occupy movement - concepts of resistance are becoming ubiquitous and urgent. In this book, Howard Caygill conducts the first ever systematic analysis of 'resistance': as a means of defying political oppression, in its relationship with military violence and its cultural representation.
Beginning with the militaristic doctrine of Clausewitz and the evolution of a new model of guerrilla warfare to resist the forces of Napoleonic France, On Resistance elucidates and critiques the contributions of seminal resistant thinkers from Marx and Nietzsche to Mao, Gandhi, Sartre and Fanon to identify continuities of resistance and rebellion from the Paris Commune to the Greenham Women's Peace Camp. Employing a threefold line of inquiry, Caygill exposes the persistent discourses through which resistance has been framed in terms of force, violence, consciousness and subjectivity to evolve a critique of resistance. Tracing the features of resistance, its strategies, character and habitual forms throughout modern world history Caygill identifies the typological consistencies which make up resistance. Finally, by teasing out the conceptual nuances of resistance and its affinities to concepts of repression, reform and revolution, Caygill reflects upon contemporary manifestations of resistance to identify whether the 21st century is evolving new understandings of protest and struggle. (amazon) (accessible via scribd)

interestingly, Caygill wrote about walter benjamin, kant, levinas, and kafka too (2020-7-29)

From Darwin to Derrida: Selfish Genes, Social Selves, and the Meanings of Life (David Haig, The MIT Press, 2020)
How the meaningless process of natural selection produces purposeful beings who find meaning in the world.
In From Darwin to Derrida, evolutionary biologist David Haig explains how a physical world of matter in motion gave rise to a living world of purpose and meaning. Natural selection, a process without purpose, gives rise to purposeful beings who find meaning in the world. The key to this, Haig proposes, is the origin of mutable “texts”—genes—that preserve a record of what has worked in the world. These texts become the specifications for the intricate mechanisms of living beings.
Haig draws on a wide range of sources—from Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy to Immanuel Kant's Critique of the Power of Judgment to the work of Jacques Derrida to the latest findings on gene transmission, duplication, and expression—to make his argument. Genes and their effects, he explains, are like eggs and chickens. Eggs exist for the sake of becoming chickens and chickens for the sake of laying eggs. A gene's effects have a causal role in determining which genes are copied. A gene (considered as a lineage of material copies) persists if its lineage has been consistently associated with survival and reproduction. Organisms can be understood as interpreters that link information from the environment to meaningful action in the environment. Meaning, Haig argues, is the output of a process of interpretation; there is a continuum from the very simplest forms of interpretation, instantiated in single RNA molecules near the origins of life, to the most sophisticated. Life is interpretation—the use of information in choice. (amazon)
well, life is interpretation, and, you see, interpretation is the famous after-the-fact fabricated deception, therefore, life is meaningless, though we try so hard to deceive ourselves it must mean something, after all, and, don't worry, even life is meaningless, life goes on, business as usual, like nothing happens, after all, we must admit, thank god, and his associates, this is the ONLY good news, left for us, the infamous laughable mortal thinking reed (2020-7-29)

There is a widely repeated story that the Nazis made Freud sign a document stating that they had treated him with “respect and consideration”. According to the story, Freud added beneath his signature: “I can heartily recommend the Gestapo to anyone”.
The document was subsequently found by researchers and contains no such comment.

(Psychology of the self) (Daseinsanalysis) (Critical Psychotherapy)

(Psychology of the self) (Daseinsanalysis) (Critical Psychotherapy)
拾荒是更新世 (Pleistocene) 的存在方式 (way of life, way of being)
(Psychology of the self) (Daseinsanalysis) (Critical Psychotherapy)

Power of the Center: A Study of Composition in the Visual Arts (Rudolf Arnheim, University of California Press, 1982) (Psychology of the self)
The tension between two systems for understanding and picturing space, the concentric and the Cartesian, is regarded by the author as the key to composition in painting, sculpture and architecture (amazon)
The Split and the Structure: Twenty-Eight Essays (Rudolf Arnheim, University of California Press, 1996) (Psychology of the self)
Rudolf Arnheim's great forte is his ability to illuminate the perceptual processes that go into the making and reception of artworks―painting, sculpture, architecture, and film. Over the years, his pioneering mode of "reading" art from a unique scientific/philosophic perspective has garnered him an established and devoted audience. That audience will take pleasure in Arnheim's most recent collection of essays, one that covers a range of topics and includes titles such as "Outer Space and Inner Space," "What Is an Aesthetic Fact?," "As I Saw Children's Art," "Two Ways of Being Human," "Consciousness―an Island of Images," and "From Chaos to Wholeness."
The notion of structure is Arnheim's guide in these explorations. Most of the essays examine the nature of structure affirmatively: how it comes about, its incentives and objectives, its celebration of perfection. He is interested in how artists grope for structure to shape powerful, enlightening images, and how a scientist's search for truth is a search for structure.
Writing with enviable clarity, even when deploying complex arguments, Arnheim makes it easy and exciting to follow him as he thinks. America is not abundantly supplied with "public intellectuals" such as Rudolf Arnheim―to have his writings with us is cause for celebration.
"The word 'structure' appears for good reason in the title of this collection. . . . Structure seems to be needed as an arbiter wherever this civilization of ours is split by selfish interests and fighting for either/or decisions. The essays want to speak with the voice of reason, because they want to show how the parts require the whole." (amazon)

H = U + PV
U is the internal energy of the system and P is constant pressure, and V is volume
ΔH = ΔU + PΔV
ΔS = ΔH/T
T is the temperature in °K or °C
Entropy measures the amount of disorder a system undergoes while transferring heat.

wild thing (野雞)

Jack Reacher
(Travel with Charley: In Search of America, 1962) 尤其是那件事發生在1960年史坦貝克五十八歲 (1902-1968) 這件事讓中年後的我六十年後振奮

Jack Reacher
(Travel with Charley: In Search of America, 1962) 尤其是那件事發生在1960年史坦貝克五十八歲 (1902-1968) 這件事讓中年後的我六十年後振奮
3:33 AM (Daseinsanalysis) (Critical Psychotherapy)
當然它是有名的屁股的刺 (pain in the ass)

Terrence Malick's hiatus
A Hidden Life (formerly titled Radegund) (Terrence Malick, 2019)

The film depicts the life of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer and devout Catholic who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. The film's title was taken from George Eliot's book Middlemarch.
the white rose and Franz Jagerstatter were in Heinz Kohut's mind too
and, today, we are facing another fucking evil empire, CCP
tell me, how are you going to face it ?

(Daseinsanalysis)
logo
