An Uneasy Dwelling

An Uneasy Dwelling: The Story of the Philadelphia Association community houses, by Paul Gordon, PCCS Books, 2010

Providing places of asylum has been at the heart of the Philadelphia Association's endeavours for more than 40 years. Hundreds of men and women, whether formally designated 'mentally ill' or experiencing serious emotional distress to the point where they can no longer cope, have found in our houses a haven, a place where, in the company of others, they are allowed to go through whatever they have to go through, in their own time and in their own way, free from the well-meaning interventions of psychiatry or family. The most famous of these was undoubtedly the first, Kingsley Hall, which opened in 1965 and which has come to have an almost iconic status in the world of what has come to be called critical (or less accurately anti-) psychiatry. When Kingsley Hall closed in 1970 (when the lease expired) the PA's attempt at providing a radically different approach to the treatment of those in states of severe emotional distress did not come to an end, as many people seem to believe. Rather it took different forms and has continued to this day.The weekend that the PA moved out of Kingsley Hall, a new community opened and more than 15 houses have been run under our auspices since and several hundred people have spent some time in them. The houses have been an inspiration to many others too. Despite our longevity and the radically different nature of our project, surprisingly little has been written about our endeavours in this respect, a few book chapters and articles, and an unpublished PhD thesis. The Philadelphia Association (PA) has never been good at self-promotion. In part this was an understandable reaction to the period when the PA was most closely identified with one of its founders, the highly public figure of RD Laing, but it has meant that what we do - which is arguably unique in its field - has felt at times like a guilty secret. This book is an attempt to correct that.(amazon)

Intellectual Impostures, by Alan Sokal, Jean Bricmont, Profile Books Ltd, 1999

The Sokal Hoax: The Sham That Shook the Academy, by Lingua Franca, Bison Books, 2000

Beyond the Hoax: Science, Philosophy and Culture, by Alan Sokal, Oxford University Press, 2008

Alan Sokal

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T6YfY-BTkY

chord chart (弦圖)

A chord chart (or chart) is a form of musical notation that describes the basic harmonic and rhythmic information for a song or tune. It is the most common form of notation used by professional session musicians playing jazz or popular music. It is intended primarily for a rhythm section (usually consisting of piano, guitar, drums and bass). In these genres the musicians are expected to be able to improvise the actual notes used for the chords and the appropriate ornamentation, counter melody or bassline. (wikipedia)

So I prefer to think of the book along the lines of a chord chart, of the kind jazz musicians use to improvise by. (ibid, 311/3787)

refrain (疊句)

a repeated line or number of lines in a poem or song, typically at the end of each verse

The fact that such a (patchwork) quilt does not have to take the shape of a rectangle or a square, but can become totally lopsided and develop in any direction or many directions, doesn't mean there can't be colors or textures that repeat here and there, creating patterns; the book definitely has conceptual motifs or refrains flowing through it, resurfacing here and there in sometimes slightly different forms or terms, only to re-submerge and then reappear elsewhere. In this respect, this book could be said to resemble a musical score ... (ibid, 304/3787, italics added)

The birth and death of Villa 21

Abstract

From 1962 to 1966 David Cooper ran an experimental hospital ward in Villa 21 of Shenley Hospital, Hertfordshire, England. In the histories of mid-twentieth-century psychiatry and anti-psychiatry, this ward has been almost entirely forgotten, overshadowed by the figure of R.D. Laing and his Kingsley Hall experiment. This study attempts to construct a history of Villa 21 and to reassert its historical importance as a manifestation of British anti-psychiatry and the radically anti-institutional politics of its time. Beginning before the opening of the ward, this article follows the story of Villa 21 on theoretical, practical and personal levels through its experimental journey and into its dramatic aftermath when Cooper's experiment was ideologically obliterated by his successor Michael Conran and physically obliterated by the Hospital administration. It contends that Villa 21 is an example of anti-psychiatry's attempt to engage with the very structure of society at a profound level.

有人說line of flight
就是line of escape

A line of flight (French: ligne de fuite) is a concept developed by Gilles Deleuze and used extensively in his work with Félix Guattari. Translator Brian Massumi notes that in French, "Fuite covers not only the act of fleeing or eluding but also flowing, leaking, and disappearing into the distance (the vanishing point in a painting is a point de fuite). It has no relation to flying." (wikipedia)

*In Deleuze and Guattari, a plateau is reached when circumstances combine to bring an activity to a pitch of intensity that is not automatically dissipated in a climax.

The heightening of energies is sustained
long enough to leave a kind of afterimage of its dynamism that can be reactivated or injected into other activities, creating a fabric of intensive
states between which any number of connecting routes could exist.

Each section of A Thousand Plateaus tries to combine conceptual bricks in such a way as to construct this kind of intensive state in thought. (Translator's Foreword: Pleasures of Philosophy, by Brian Massumi, p. 15)

Psychology and Neoliberalism (Concepts for Critical Psychology) (Michael Arfken, Routledge, Nov 10, 2016)

During the Enlightenment a new idea of the person was conceived which in turn came to have far-reaching effects on the development of liberal democratic theory and political economy. By looking at the psychological theories that were developed to support our modern political and economic institutions, Mike Arfken demonstrates that psychology has not only played a vital role in the development of liberalism but also in the more recent expansion of neoliberal capitalism. In this way, modern psychology is revealed as the expression of an underlying political economy.
The book's primary focus is on the historical, philosophical, and theoretical dimensions of psychology and neoliberalism, but it also considers a number of prominent concrete examples. The author gives particular attention to how the emergence of the cognitive revolution and the recent interest in social class and globalization have made psychological theory and practice instrumental in the reproduction and expansion of neoliberalism.

Michael Arfken is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada, where he teaches courses in critical psychology, phenomenological psychology, and ecopsychology. (amazon)

Nomad Citizenship: Free-Market Communism and the Slow-Motion General Strike (Eugene W. Holland, 2011)

Nomad Citizenship argues for transforming our institutions and practices of citizenship and markets in order to release society from dependence on the state and capital. It changes Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of nomadology into a utopian project with immediate practical implications, developing ideas of a nonlinear Marxism and of the slow-motion general strike.
Responding to the challenge of creating philosophical concepts with concrete applications, Eugene W. Holland looks outside the state to analyze contemporary political and economic development using the ideas of nomad citizenship and free-market communism. Holland’s nomadology seeks to displace capital-controlled free markets with truly free markets. Its goal is to rescue market exchange, not perpetuate capitalism—to enable noncapitalist markets to coordinate socialized production on a global scale and, with an eye to the common good, to liberate them from capitalist control.
In suggesting the slow-motion general strike, Holland aims to transform citizenship: to renew, enrich, and invigorate it by supplanting the monopoly of state citizenship with plural nomad citizenships. In the process, he offers critiques of both the Clinton and Bush regimes in the broader context of critiques of the social contract, the labor contract, and the form of the state itself. (amazon)

Deleuze and Psychology: Philosophical Provocations to Psychological Practices (Concepts for Critical Psychology) (Maria Nichterlein, John R. Morss, Aug 5, 2016)

This book overviews the philosophical contribution of Deleuze including the project he developed with Guattari. It goes on to explore the application of these ideas in three major dimensions of psychology: its unit of analysis, its method and its applications to the clinic. (amazon) (kindle 2016-8-6)

... the connections that Deleuze establishes between literature and the clinic are central to understanding how a philosophy of Difference articulates itself in grounded practices. ... literature is not understood in the familiar sense of narrative approaches in therapy, but as a way of being in language. (Lichterliein & Morss, 2016, preface, italics added)

With Deleuze we find inspiration in the creativity of the artist for visions of an energised psychology. (ibid, afterword)

Insight: Essays on Psychoanalytic Knowing (Jorge L. Ahumada, 2011)

Insight means "How do we know about our psychic reality?"

James Rose mentioned about this book in "The Non-Linear Mind: Psychoanalysis of Complexity in Psychic Life" (2016, Chap 8).

Ahumada takes the view that the fundamental dynamic of insight is counter-induction. This means reversing the usual logic of induction, which is to identify the general from the particular. Counter-induction is an apparently paradoxical position of taking the way things have been observed as a guide to how they are not. ... Identification of these ideas shaping experience is the stuff of insight. These "ideas" might be thought to be the manifestations of the analysand's strange attractors. (ibid, kindle location 3104-3108/3723)

A la David Smail, we need another book on "Outsight", i.e. "How do we know about our external reality?"
