Affirmation of Life (negativity vs vitality)

1. Psychoanalytic Approaches to Problems in Living: Addressing Life's Challenges in Clinical Practice (Sandra Buechler, 2019)

All my writing can be read as an extended effort to come to terms with mourning, aging, uncertainty, loneliness, and other fundamental human challenges.

Much of my writing (Buechler, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2017) comes from my effort to raise my own consciousness of the “response biases” I bring to my clinical work. How have I been shaped by my background, as a citizen, a reader, born in a particular time and place, growing up in a specific environment, educated and professionally trained in particular schools of thought? (Acknowledgement)

In my previous work, I explored the values I think most clinicians share (2004), the emotions and thought processes we have in common (2008), the professional phases we undergo (2012), and the specific challenges we face working with people who come to treatment with a variety of character styles (2015). In the present book, I ask how we can prepare to face some of the fundamental issues our patients raise. Poets, fiction writers, psychologists, philosophers, sociologists, and many others have contributed thoughts about facing aloneness, loss, aging, uncertainty, suffering, shame, helplessness, and other hardships that are part of the human condition. What can I offer patients struggling with these challenges? (p. 4)
