易經 (Daseinsanalysis)

(Critical Psychotherapy)

Freud 的 will to truth
Ferenczi 的 will to heal
Frankl 的 will to meaning
Nietzsche 的 will to power
Heidegger 的 gelassenheit
Orwell 的 fair and decent
共匪 的 will to evil

(Daseinsanalysis) (Psychology of the self)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Default_mode_network

(Daseinsanalysis) (Critical Psychotherapy) (Psychology of the self)

明顯是 the already dead

Resistant subjectivities, then, do not enjoy the freedom of possibility, but only a bare capacity to resist enmity and chance. The modal category of actuality corresponds to this capacity and is expressed in terms of the distension of the event: the capacity to resist does not occupy a punctual present, but is strung between past and future. Resistant subjectivity is in a sense already dead, a posthumous subjectivity evoked by Bakunin in the Revolutionary Catechism and echoed in the declaration before a court of martial law by the German revolutionary Levine that Communists are the dead on leave: they must live as if their death has already been decreed by the enemy; they have no right to life, their survival a matter of chance. It is the sheer necessity of resisting that intensifies their capacity for resistance. Mao, Fanon and the Zapatistas occupy this dead present with varying degrees of affirmation; theirs is the resistant subjectivity described by Clausewitz in terms of the aktus of resistance. (Howard Caygill, 2013, p. 98)

The work of Frantz Fanon (1925–61) constitutes one of the most sophisticated and unflinching analyses of the constitution of a violent resistant subjectivity. An active combatant in the Forces francaises libres after 1943, he was decorated with the Croix de Guerre, but had few illusions about the ‘false ideology’ for which he was fighting. His experience of combat left him with what Magali Bessone has aptly described as ‘le sentiment d’un mort en suspens’ (Fanon 2011, 25), the sense of already being dead – that is, devoid of possibility – that characterizes many expressions of resistant
subjectivity. (ibid, p. 99)

Howard Caygill

Winnicott, Bion, Levi

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Heidegger#Early_years

Raised a Roman Catholic, he was the son of the sexton of the village church that adhered to the First Vatican Council of 1870, which was observed mainly by the poorer class of Meßkirch.

Gerard Sekoto (1913-1993)

Gerard Sekoto is without doubt one of South Africa's major painters of the twentieth century. Considered increasingly as one of the earliest South African modernists and social realists, he completed his most memorable work during the early and middle years of the 1940s, first at Sophiatown (Johannesburg), then in District Six in Cape Town and later in Eastwood, Pretoria. When he left to go to Paris in 1947, he was at the height of his creative powers. Yet during the forty-five years that he spent as an exile in France, his talent, moral resilience, dedication, belief in the equality of all people and, most of all, his identity as an African sustained him during the most difficult times.

Sekoto said of his work, "All my paintings searched to rediscover an identity common to all people of different origins, to the quest for the common relation between beings."

The story told in this book reveals the extent to which triumphant moments in the painter's life were, at times, accompanied by heart-rending adversity. Interesting too is the richness retrospectively brought to light by the discovery, after Sekoto's death, of the painter's suitcase of treasures, which contained previously unknown musical compositions, letters and a large quantity of notes, writings and private documents.

The biography ends with a statement by Gerard Sekoto on art and the responsibility of artists, which he presented in Rome in 1959. Photographs and full color plates of previously unpublished and significant paintings are included.

Frantz Fanon and the Psychology of Oppression (Path in Psychology) (Hussein Abdilahi Bulhan, Plenum Press, 1985)

This is a biography of Frantz Fanon. It presents an absorbing and careful ac count of several impressive themes. First is the review and assessment of Fanon's life. Second is a theory of psychology, by the author, which will aug ment and prove useful to theorists and practitioners who focus on Third World people. And lastly there is a broad and systematic integration of many areas of scholarship including philosophy, anthropology, political science, history, sociology, mythology, public health, and economics. Bulhan's writing is lucid, creative, and persuasive. It demonstrates that all these scholarly areas must be handled with erudition in order to build a baseline for understanding both Fanon and the psychology of oppression. Readers of Fanon will be familiar with the psychology of oppression which he presented so forcefully. How life events and experiences led to the formulation of this psychology is the chief emphasis of the author. Yet the book also gives scintillating clinical proof that Fanon made many other significant contributions to his field. He was an outstanding and dedicated physician as well as a philosopher and political activist. (amazon)

(Daseinsanalysis)

Frantz Fanon and Emancipatory Theory: A View from the Wretched (Studies in Critical Social Science) (ed. Dustin J. Byrd, Seyed Javad Miri, Haymarket Books, 2020-10-6)

In Frantz Fanon and Emancipatory Social Theory: A View from the Wretched, Dustin J. Byrd and Seyed Javad Miri bring together a collection of essays by a variety of scholars who explore the lasting influence of Frantz Fanon, renowned psychiatrist, revolutionary, and social theorist.

Fanon’s work not only gave voice to the “wretched” in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962), but also shaped the radical resistance to colonialism, empire, and racism throughout much of the world. His seminal works, such as Black Skin, White Masks, and The Wretched of the Earth, were read by The Black Panther Party in the United States, anti-imperialists in Africa and Asia, and anti-monarchist revolutionaries in the Middle East. Today, many revolutionaries and scholars have returned to Fanon’s work, as it continues to shed light on the nature of colonial domination, racism, and class oppression.

Being and Event (Alaine Badiou, 1988) (2005)

Being and Event

The major propositions of Badiou's philosophy all find their basis in Being and Event, in which he continues his attempt (which he began in Théorie du sujet) to reconcile a notion of the subject with ontology, and in particular post-structuralist and constructivist ontologies. A frequent criticism of post-structuralist work is that it prohibits, through its fixation on semiotics and language, any notion of a subject. Badiou's work is, by his own admission, an attempt to break out of contemporary philosophy's fixation upon language, which he sees almost as a straitjacket. This effort leads him, in Being and Event, to combine rigorous mathematical formulae with his readings of poets such s Mallarmé and Hölderlin and religious thinkers such as Pascal. His philosophy draws upon both 'analytical' and 'continental' traditions. In Badiou's own opinion, this combination places him awkwardly relative to his contemporaries, meaning that his work had been only slowly taken up. Being and Event offers an example of this slow uptake, in fact: it was translated into English only in 2005, a full seventeen years after its French publication.
As is implied in the title of the book, two elements mark the thesis of Being and Event: the place of ontology, or 'the science of being qua being' (being in itself), and the place of the event – which is seen as a rupture in being – through which the subject finds realization and reconciliation with truth. This situation of being and the rupture which characterizes the event are thought in terms of set theory, and specifically Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory (with the axiom of choice), to which Badiou accords a fundamental role in a manner quite distinct from the majority of either mathematicians or philosophers. The Rise of Victimhood Culture: Microaggressions, Safe Spaces, and the New Culture Wars (Bradley Campbell, Jason Manning, Palgrave Macmillan, 2018)

The Rise of Victimhood Culture offers a framework for understanding recent moral conflicts at U.S. universities, which have bled into society at large. These are not the familiar clashes between liberals and conservatives or the religious and the secular: instead, they are clashes between a new moral culture―victimhood culture―and a more traditional culture of dignity. Even as students increasingly demand trigger warnings and “safe spaces,” many young people are quick to police the words and deeds of others, who in turn claim that political correctness has run amok. Interestingly, members of both camps often consider themselves victims of the other. In tracking the rise of victimhood culture, Bradley Campbell and Jason Manning help to decode an often dizzying cultural milieu, from campus riots over conservative speakers and debates around free speech to the election of Donald Trump. The Declared Enemy: Texts and Interviews (Jean Genet, Stanford University Press, 2003)

This posthumous work brings together articles, interviews, statements, prefaces, manifestos, and speeches dating from 1964 to 1985 (just before Genet's death in 1986). These texts bear witness to the many political causes and groups with which Genet felt an affinity, including May ’68 and the treatment of immigrants in France, but especially the Black Panthers and the Palestinians. We follow him from the Chicago Democratic Convention (where he met William Burroughs and Alan Ginsberg) to Yale University, where he gave the famous May Day Speech in support of the Black Panthers, to Jordan and the Palestinian camps. Along the way, Genet finds allies (George Jackson, Angela Davis, Leyla Shahid, Tahar Ben Jelloun). And, of course, enemies. Between passionate enmity and passionate affinity, Genet speaks for a politics of protest, with an uncompromising outrage that, today, might seem on the verge of being forgotten. The texts are accompanied by detailed editorial notes. (amazon) (accessible via scribd)

Power of Reading: From Socrates to Twitter (Frank Furedi, Bloomsbury Continuum, 2015)

Eminent cultural and social historian Frank Furedi presents an eclectic and entirely original history of reading. The very act of reading and the choice of reading material endow individuals with an identity that possesses great symbolic significance. In ancient Rome, Cicero was busy drawing up a hierarchy of different types of readers. Since that time, people have been divided into a variety of categories--literates and illiterates, intensive and extensive readers, or vulgo and discreet readers. In the 19th century, accomplished readers were praised as "men of letters," while their moral opposites were described as "unlettered." Today, distinctions are made between cultural and instrumental readers and scorn is directed toward the infamous "tabloid reader."
Power of Reading explores the changing meanings attributed to the act of reading. Although it has a historical perspective, the book's focus is very much on the culture of reading that prevails in the 21st century. It is a fascinating insight into understanding the post-Gutenberg debates about literacy in a multimedia environment with such a strong emphasis on the absorption of information. Taking a cue from George Steiner, Furedi argues vigorously for the restoration of the art of reading--every bit as important as the art of writing. (amazon)

How Fear Works: Culture of Fear in the Twenty-First Century (Frank Furedi, Bloomsbury Continuum, 2018)

In 1997, Frank Furedi published a book called Culture of Fear. It was widely acclaimed as perceptive and prophetic. Now Furedi returns to his original theme, as most of what he predicted has come true.

In this new book, Furedi seeks to explain two interrelated themes: why has fear acquired such a morally commanding status in society today and how has the way we fear today changed from the way that it was experienced in the past? He explores key moments in the history of fear to help situate the workings of this emotion in contemporary society.

Furedi argues that one of the main drivers of the culture of fear is unraveling of moral authority. Fear appears to provide a provisional solution to moral uncertainty and is for that reason embraced by a variety of interests, parties, and individuals. Furedi predicts that until society finds a more positive orientation towards uncertainty the politicization of fear will flourish.

Fear has become a problem in its own right to the extent that people now use the term "culture of fear" as an everyday idiom. It has become detached from its material and physical source and experienced as a secular version of a transcendental force. So now fear has become a "Perspective" accepted throughout society. Furedi claims that this perspective has acquired a dominant status because in contrast to other options it appears to be singularly effective in influencing people's behavior.

Society is trained to believe that the threats it faces are incalculable and cannot be controlled or regulated. The acceptance of this outlook has been paralleled by the cultivation of helplessness and passivity--all this has resulted in a redefinition of personhood. As a consequence we are constantly searching for new forms of security, both physical and ontological. What is the role of the media in promoting fear and who actually benefits from this culture of fear? These are some of the issues Furedi tackles and much more. (amazon)

Why Borders Matter: Why Humanity Must Relearn the Art of Drawing Boundaries (Frank Furedi, Routledge, 2020)

Western society has become estranged from the borders and social boundaries that have for centuries given meaning to human experience. This book argues that the controversy surrounding mass migration and physical borders runs in parallel and is closely connected to the debates surrounding the symbolic boundaries people need to guide on the issues of everyday life.
Numerous commentators claim that borders have become irrelevant in the age of mass migration and globalisation. Some go so far as to argue for ‘No Borders’. And it is not merely the boundaries that divide nations that are under attack! The traditional boundaries that separate adults from children, or men from women, or humans from animals, or citizens and non-citizens, or the private from the public sphere are often condemned as arbitrary, unnatural, and even unjust. Paradoxically, the attempt to alter or abolish conventional boundaries coexists with the imperative of constructing new ones. No-Border campaigners call for safe spaces. Opponents of cultural appropriation demand the policing of language and advocates of identity politics are busy building boundaries to keep out would-be encroachers on their identity.
Furedi argues that the key driver of the confusion surrounding borders and boundaries is the difficulty that society has in endowing experience with meaning. The most striking symptom of this trend is the cultural devaluation of the act of judgment, which has led to a loss of clarity about the moral boundaries in everyday life. The infantilisation of adults that runs in tandem with the adultification of children offers a striking example of the consequence of non-judgmentalism.
Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars in cultural sociology, sociology of knowledge, philosophy, political theory, and cultural studies. (amazon)

The Oxford Handbook of Phenomenological Psychopathology (International Perspectives in Philosophy and Psychiatry) (ed. Giovanni Stanghellini, et al, Oxford University Press, 2019) (Psychology of the self) (Daseinsanalysis)

The field of phenomenological psychopathology (PP) is concerned with exploring and describing the individual experience of those suffering from mental disorders. Whilst there is often an understandable emphasis within psychiatry on diagnosis and treatment, the subjective experience of the individual is frequently overlooked.

Yet a patient's own account of how their illness affects their thoughts, values, consciousness, and sense of self, can provide important insights into their condition - insights that can complement the more empirical findings from studies of brain function or behaviour.

The Oxford Handbook of Phenomenological Psychopathology is the first ever comprehensive review of the field. It considers the history of PP, its methodology, key concepts, and includes a section exploring individual experiences within schizophrenia, depression, borderline personality disorder, OCD, and phobia. In addition it includes chapters on some of the leading figures throughout the history of this field.

Bringing together chapters from a global team of leading academics, researchers and practitioners, the book will be valuable for those within the fields of psychiatry, clinical psychology, and philosophy. (amazon) (accessible via scribd)

(Critical Psychotherapy) (Psychology of the self) (Daseinsanalysis)

Andrew Samuels (Chap 10, in Del Loewenthal, 2015, kindle location 3894/6943)

What attracts me to the Trickster-Therapist is their very lack of a coherent psychological project. In fact, they lack ambition to do good. If they do good it is often by accident. This is how I have come to think of healing and cure in psychotherapy. There can be little or no cleaning up of our Trickster-Therapist. Primitivity and amorality make Tricksters what they are.

The Greek Trickster god was Hermes, who was responsible for trade and commerce, maintenance and penetration of boundaries, and carrying the messages of the gods, as well as carrying out practical jokes and mockery of the powerful.

Can this coarsely energetic figure be refashioned so as to speak to therapists ? (Andrew Samuels (2015) Chap 10, in Del Loewenthal, 2015, kindle location 3894/6943)

(The Great Stone Face, Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1850) 為原型 這明顯是辛苦的 仍存一線希望感動天地的原型

(Psychology of the self) (Daseinsanalysis)

Theodor Adorno
History: The Last Things Before the Last
Samuel Beckett 的 Stirrings Still
Gabriel Carcia Marques 的 Memories of My Melancholy Whores (Henning Carlsen, 2014) (1927-2014)

(Critical Psychotherapy)

Oedipus

(Critical Psychotherapy)

Psychotherapy As Religion: The Civil Divine In America (William M. Epstein, University of Nevada Press, 2006) (Critical Psychotherapy)

A provocative look at America on the couch. In Psychotherapy as Religion, William Epstein sets out to debunk claims that psychotherapy provides successful clinical treatment for a wide range of personal and social problems. He argues that the practice is not a science at all but rather the civil religion of America, reflecting the principles of radical self-invention and self-reliance deeply embedded in the psyche of the nation. Epstein begins by analyzing a number of clinical studies conducted over the past two decades that purport to establish the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic treatments. He finds that each study violates in some way the standard criteria of scientific credibility and that the field has completely failed to establish objective procedures and measurements to assess clinical outcomes. Epstein exposes psychotherapy’s deep roots in the religious and intellectual movements of the early nineteenth century by demonstrating striking parallels between various types of therapy and such popular practices as Christian Science and spiritualism. Psychotherapy has taken root in our culture because it so effectively reflects our national faith in individual responsibility for social and personal problems. It thrives as the foundation of American social welfare policy, blaming deviance and misery on deficiencies of character rather than on the imperfections of society and ignoring the influence of unequal and deficient social conditions while requiring miscreants to undergo the moral reeducation that psychotherapy represents. This is a provocative, brilliantly argued look at America on the couch. Psychotherapy as Religion is essential reading for anyone interested in the history and current state of mental health. (amazon) (accessible via scribd)

"In fact, there has never been a scientifically credible study that attests to the effectiveness of any form of psychotherapy for any mental or emotional problem under any condition of treatment." (ibid, p. 220) (quoted by Paul Moloney (2015), Psychology, Psychotherapy - Coming to Our Senses?, Chap 14, in Del Loewenthal, 2015, kindle location 4941/6943)

Psychotherapy and the Social Clinic in the United States: Soothing Fictions (William M. Epstein, Palgrave Macmillan, 2019) (Critical Psychotherapy)

This book offers a compelling critical analysis of American society by examining the role of psychotherapy within social policy and the culture that has fashioned it. It takes a deeply critical look at ‘the social clinic,’ defined here as a ubiquitous organizational arrangement that includes clinical and community psychology, counseling, clinical social work, psychiatry, much of the self-help industry, complementary and alternative medicine and others. Epstein’s analysis concludes that the social clinic lacks credible evidence of effectiveness and its continued popularity expresses popular but predatory American values such as romantic individualism, the triumph of the subjective, a sense of personal and political chosenness, persistent bigotry, and a preference for tribal as opposed to civic identities. This careful examination of American society through the lens of psychotherapeutic practice characterizes the social clinic as a soothing fiction of the United States.

The book offers caring services as the unrealized alternative to clinical treatment, capable of achieving greater personal adjustment as well as social and economic equality. It will appeal to readers with an interest in social welfare, public policy, and public administration, as well as to students and scholars of psychotherapy, counseling, social work, rehabilitation, and community psychology.

Freud and the Émigré: Austrian Émigrés, Exiles and the Legacy of Psychoanalysis in Britain, 1930s–1970s (ed. Elana Shapira, Daniela Finzi, Palgrave Macmillan, 2020-11-8)

This book reconsiders standard narratives regarding Austrian émigrés and exiles to Britain by addressing the seminal role of Sigmund Freud and his writings, and the critical part played by his contemporaries, in the construction of a method promoting humanized relations between individual and society and subjectivity and culture. This anthology presents groundbreaking examples of the manners in which well-known personalities including psychoanalysts Anna Freud and Ernst Kris, sociologist Marie Jahoda, authors Stefan Zweig and Hilde Spiel, film director Berthold Viertel, architect Ernst Freud, and artist Oskar Kokoschka, achieved a greater impact, and contributed to the broadening of British and global cultures, through constructing a psychologically effective language and activating their émigré networks. They advanced a visionary Viennese tradition through political and social engagements and through promoting humanistic perspectives in their scientific, educational and artistic works. (amazon)

Scansion in Psychoanalysis and Art: The Cut in Creation (Art, Creativity, and Psychoanalysis Book Series) (Vanessa Sinclair, Routledge, 2020-11-17)

Scansion in Psychoanalysis and Art examines a strain of artists spanning more than a century, beginning at the dawn of photography and culminating in the discussion of contemporary artists, to illustrate various psychoanalytic concepts by examining artists working in a multitude of mediums.
Drawing on the theories of Sigmund Freud, who applied psychoanalytic methods to art and literature to decipher the meaning and intention of the creator, as well as Jacques Lacan’s dissemination of scansion as a powerful disruption of narrative, the book explores examples of the long and rich relationship between psychoanalysis and the fine arts. Whilst guiding readers through the different artists and their artforms - from painting and music to poetry, collage, photography, film, performance art, technology and body modification - Sinclair interrogates scansion as a generative process often inherent of the act of creation itself.
This is an intriguing book for psychoanalysts, psychologists and creative arts therapists, who wish to explore the generative potential of scansion and the relationship between psychoanalysis and the arts, as well as to artists and art historians interested in a psychoanalytic view of these processes. When Minds Meet: The Work of Lewis Aron (Relational Perspectives Book Series) (ed. Galit Atlas, Routledge, 2020-11-30)

This extraordinary volume offers a sampling of Lewis Aron’s most important contributions to Relational psychoanalysis.
One of the founders of Relational thinking, Aron was an internationally recognized psychoanalyst, sought after teacher, lecturer, and the Director of the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. His pioneering work introduced and revolutionized the concepts of mutuality, the analyst’s subjectivity, and the paradigm of mutual vulnerability in the analytic setting. During the last few years of his life, Aron was exploring the ethical considerations of writing psychoanalytic case histories and the importance of self-reflection and scepticism not only for analysts with their patients, but also as a stance towards the field of psychoanalysis itself. Aron is known for his singular, highly compelling teaching and writing style and for an unparalleled ability to convey complex, often comparative theoretical concepts in a uniquely inviting and approachable way. The reader will encounter both seminal papers on the vision and method of contemporary clinical practice, as well as cutting edge newer writing from the years just before his death. Edited and with a foreword by Galit Atlas, each chapter is preceded by a new introduction by some of the most important thinkers in our field: Jessica Benjamin, Michael Eigen Jay Greenberg, Adrienne Harris, Stephen Hartman Steven Kuchuck, Thomas Ogden, Joyce Slochower, Donnel Stern, Merav Roth, Chana Ullman and Aron himself.
This book will make an important addition to the libraries of experienced clinicians and psychoanalytic scholars already familiar with Aron’s work, as well as students, newer professionals or anyone seeking an introduction to relational psychoanalysis and one of its most stunning, vibrant voices.(amazon)

Theoretical and Clinical Perspectives on Narrative in Psychoanalysis: The Creation of Intimate Fictions (Joye Weisel-Barth, Routledge, 2020-12-30)

This book is of and about psychoanalytic stories. It describes the personal, theoretical, and cultural stories that patients and analysts bring, create, and modify in analytic work. It shows how the joint creation of new life narratives over time results in transformed senses of self and relationship.
Flowing from the tradition of narrative theory, these stories seek to recast the creation of analytic narratives in social contexts and contemporary relational theories. They depict ongoing therapeutic process and heightened interactive events and moments that together expand personal scope and change life directions for both partners in the analytic dyad. Its stories illuminate sometimes difficult and arcane analytic theory, bringing the meanings and utility of theory into living action. They also show how familiar emotions such as love, hate, envy, loneliness and active human values such as empathy, generosity, and good faith function in psychoanalytic interaction. In short, these analytic stories are useful teaching tools. The narrative tales in this book address a wide range of history and emotions in both patients and analyst. The patients, fictionalized characters from a lifetime of analytic practice, are protagonists with backgrounds of trauma, loss, relational and geographical dislocation but also successful adaptations and struggle toward self-development. Some of their stories describe intense short-term work and others long-term analytic relationships. The subjective experience and responses of the analyst are also central parts of the analytic fictions. (amazon)
for me, fiction, if it is worth its salt, has to be fragmented and cruel, and, not sure yet, but maybe, this one, is a pro-Proustian one, in other words, you can relax, there is no unsweetened horror here

Talking about Evil: Psychoanalytic, Social, and Cultural Perspectives (Relational Perspectives Book Series) (ed. Rina Lazar, Routledge, 2016)

How can we talk about evil? How can we make sense of its presence all around us? How can we come to terms with the sad fact that our involvement in doing or enabling evil is an interminable aspect of our lives in the world? This book is an attempt to engage these questions in a new way.
Written from within the complicated reality of Israel, the contributors to this book forge a collective effort to think about evil from multiple perspectives. A necessary effort, since psychoanalysis has been slow to account for the existence of evil, while philosophy and the social sciences have tended to neglect its psychological aspects.
The essays collected here join to form a wide canvas on which a portrait of evil gradually emerges, from the Bible, through the enlightenment to the Holocaust; from Kant, through Freud, Klein, Bromberg and Stein to Arendt, Agamben and Bauman; using literature, history, cinema, social theory and psychoanalysis.
Talking about Evil opens up a much needed space for thinking, in itself an antidote to evil. It will be of interest to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and scholars and students of philosophy, social theory and the humanities.(amazon) (accessible via scribd)

The Already Dead: The New Time of Politics, Culture, and Illness (Eric Cazdyn, Duke University Press, 2012)

In The Already Dead, Eric Cazdyn examines the ways that contemporary medicine, globalization, politics, and culture intersect to produce a condition and concept that he names "the new chronic." Cazdyn argues that just as contemporary medicine uses targeted drug therapies and biotechnology to manage rather than cure diseases, global capitalism aims not for resolution but rather for a continual state of crisis management that perpetuates the iniquities of the status quo. Engaging critical theory, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, he explores the ways that crisis affects perceptions of time and denies alternative ways of being and thinking.
To resist the exploitative crisis state, which Cazdyn terms "the global abyss," he posits the concept of "the already dead," a condition in which the subject (medical, political, psychological) has been killed but has yet to die. Embracing this condition, he argues, allows for a revolutionary consciousness open to a utopian future. Woven into Cazdyn's analysis are personal anecdotes about his battle with leukemia and his struggle to obtain Canadian citizenship during his illness. These narratives help to illustrate his systemic critique, one that reconfigures the relationship between politics, capitalism, revolution, and the body. When asked whether he would see a new patient, a psychoanalyst wanted to know if it was an emergency. ‘‘No, the patient’s relatively stable, functional, adjusted—not in crisis,’’ the referring doctor replied. ‘‘Oh no!’’ the analyst exclaimed. ‘‘In that case I better see him right away.’

Being Posthuman: Ontologies of the Future (Zahi Zalloua, Bloomsbury Academic, 2021-1-14)

Posthumanism is both a descriptive and a prescriptive term. Firstly, it registers a shift beginning in the late 1960s and epitomized by Foucault's “the death of Man”. Secondly, it refers to the future and a new relationship with the non-human, along with a different understanding of human exceptionalism.

In Being Posthuman: Ontologies of the Future, Zahi Zalloua interrogates this future and shows that “post-” does not necessarily mean 'after' or that what comes after is more advanced than what has gone before. He pursues this line of inquiry across four distinct, yet interrelated, figures: cyborgs, animals, objects, and racialized and excluded 'others'. These figures disrupt the narrative of the 'human' and its singularity and by reading them together, Zalloua determines that it is only when posthumanist discourse is combined with psychoanalysis that subjectivity can be properly examined.
