relational theory

De-Idealizing Relational Theory: A Critique From Within (Relational Perspectives Book Series), ed. by Lewis Aron, Sue Grand, Joyce A. Slochower, Routledge, June 15, 2018

Self-examination and self-critique: for psychoanalytic patients, this is the conduit to growth. Yet within the field, psychoanalysts haven’t sufficiently utilized their own methodology or subjected their own preferred approaches to systematic and critical self-examination. Across theoretical divides, psychoanalytic writers and clinicians have too often responded to criticism with defensiveness rather than reflectivity.

De-Idealizing Relational Theory attempts to rectify this for the relational field. This book is a first in the history of psychoanalysis; it takes internal dissension and difference seriously rather than defensively. Rather than saying that the other’s reading of relational theory is wrong, distorted, or a misrepresentation, this book is interested in querying how theory lends itself to such characterizations. How have psychoanalysts participated in conveying this portrayal to their critics? Might this dissension illuminate blind-spot(s) and highlight new areas of growth?
It's a challenge to engage in psychoanalytic self-critique. To do so requires that we move beyond our own assumptions and deeply held beliefs about what moves the treatment process and how we can best function within it. To step aside from ourselves, to question the assumed, to take the critiques of others seriously, demands more than an absence of defensiveness. It requires that we step into the shoes of the psychoanalytic Other and suspend not only our theories, but our emotional investment in them. There are a range of ways in which our authors took up that challenge. Some revisted the assumptions that underlay early relational thinking and expanded their sources (Greenberg & Aron). Some took up specific aspects of relational technique and unpacked their roots and evolution (Mark, Cooper). Some offered an expanded view of what constitutes relational theory and technique (Seligman, Corbett, Grossmark). Some more directly critiqued aspects of relational theory and technique (Berman, Stern). And some took on a broader critique of relational theory or technique (Layton, Slochower).
Unsurprisingly, no single essay examined the totality of relational thinking, its theoretical and clinical implications. This task would be herculean both practically and psychologically. We're all invested in aspects of what we think and what we do; at best, we examine some, but never all of our assumptions and ideas. We recognize, retrospectively, how very challenging a task this was; it asked writers to engage in what we might think of as a self-analysis of the countertransference. Taken together these essays represent a significant effort at self-critique and we are enormously proud of it.
Each chapter critically assesses and examines aspects of relational theory and technique, considers its current state and its relations to other psychoanalytic approaches. De-Idealizing Relational Theory will appeal to all relational psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists. Decentering Relational Theory: A Comparative Critique (Relational Perspectives Book Series), ed. by Lewis Aron, Sue Grand, Joyce A. Slochower, Routledge, June 8, 2018

Decentering Relational Theory: A Comparative Critique invites relational theorists to contemplate the influence, overlaps, and relationship between relational theory and other perspectives. Self-critique was the focus of De-Idealizing Relational Theory. Decentering Relational Theory pushes critique in a different direction by explicitly engaging the questions of theoretical and clinical overlap – and lack thereof – with writers from other psychoanalytic orientations. In part, this comparison involves critique, but in part, it does not. It addresses issues of influence, both bidirectional and unidimensional. Our authors took up this challenge in different ways.
Like our authors in De-Idealizing, writers who contributed to Decentering were asked to move beyond their own perspective without stereotyping alternate perspectives. Instead, they seek to expand our understanding of the convergences and divergences between different relational perspectives and those of other theories.
Whether to locate relational thought in a broader theoretical envelope, make links to other theories, address critiques leveled at us, or push relational thinking forward, our contributors thought outside the box. The kinds of comparisons they were asked to make were challenging. We are grateful to them for having taken up this challenge. Decentering Relational Theory: A Comparative Critique will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists across the theoretical spectrum. A Philosophy for Europe: From the Outside (Roberto Esposito, Polity, 2018-7-2)

Amid a devastating economic crisis, two tragic events coming from the outside – the wave of immigration and Islamic terrorism – have radically changed the profile and significance of the space we call Europe. Given a paradigm leap of this sort, philosophical reflection is in a position to exert its creative power more than other types of knowledge. But this can only happen if it is able to go beyond its own lexical boundaries, by turning its gaze outside itself.

Here the leading Italian philosopher Roberto Esposito looks at how various strands of German, French, and Italian thought have achieved this outward turn and successfully captured international attention by breaking with the language of early nineteenth-century crisis philosophies. When analyzed from this novel perspective, the great texts of Adorno, Derrida, Foucault, and Deleuze, as well as works by the latest Italian thinkers, are cast in a new light. From the relationship and tension between them, reconstructed here with extraordinary theoretical sensitivity, a form of thought can arise that is equal to the challenges faced by Europe today.

This erudite and wide-ranging analysis of European thought in the light of the crises facing the continent today will appeal to students and scholars of philosophy, critical theory, and beyond. (amazon)

International Dictionary of Psychoanalysis, 3 Volume Set (ed. Alain De Mijolla, Macmillan Reference USA; 2005)

More than a field of science of medicine, psychoanalysis - the interpretation and treatment of disorders and behaviors of the mind - is field that has touched nearly all other arts and humanities: literature, painting, film, music and more. To understand the underpinnings of this field is to shed light on how much of the Western world has understood itself during the 20th century.

The International Dictionary of Psychoanalysis - published in France in 2002 and now available in English - is the most extensive reference work published on this topic. The International Dictionary of Psychoanalysis not only represents all branches of the field, but it also defines the evolution of the different theoretical and clinical psychoanalytical concepts as well as the major individuals, works, events and institutions which have made an impact on the history of the psychoanalytical movement worldwide. It also reveals the history of psychoanalysis in 50 countries and shows the relationship between psychoanalysis and other disciplines, with entries discussing writers, philosophers, literary movements, and historical events. the major psychoanalysts worldwide and 170 articles on their major works. This set distinguishes itself because it brings, in the controversial field of psychoanalysis, an authoritative and non-partisan analysis and history of the discipline, with writers reflecting a cosmopolitan range of ideological positions - Freudians, Jungians, Lacanians, and Kleinians - as well as clinical practitioners and academic historians. The international team of authors representing most parts of the world provides a truly global perspective on this field. Its interdisciplinary approach covering medical, historical, and intellectual aspects, makes it of interest to readers beyond the fields of psychoanalysis, psychology, and medicine. (amazon)

Clinical Perspectives on Meaning: Positive and Existential Psychotherapy (ed. Pninit Russo-Netzer et al., Springer, 2016)

"Clinical Perspectives on Meaning: Positive and Existential Psychotherapy . . . is an outstanding collection of new contributions that build thoughtfully on the past, while at the same time, take the uniquely human capacity for meaning-making to important new places." - From the preface by Carol D. Ryff and Chiara Ruini
This unique theory-to-practice volume presents far-reaching advances in positive and existential therapy, with emphasis on meaning-making as central to coping and resilience, growth and positive change. Innovative meaning-based strategies are presented with clients facing medical and mental health challenges such as spinal cord injury, depression, and cancer. Diverse populations and settings are considered, including substance abuse, disasters, group therapy, and at-risk youth. Contributors demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of meaning-making interventions by addressing novel findings in this rapidly growing and promising area. By providing broad international and interdisciplinary perspectives, it enhances empirical findings and offers valuable practical insights. Such a diverse and varied examination of meaning encourages the reader to integrate his or her thoughts from both existential and positive psychology perspectives, as well as from clinical and empirical approaches, and guides the theoretical convergence to a unique point of understanding and appreciation for the value of meaning and its pursuit.
Included in the coverage:

·         The proper aim of therapy: Subjective well-being, objective goodness, or a meaningful life?
·         Character strengths and mindfulness as core pathways to meaning in life
·         The significance of meaning to conceptualizations of resilience and posttraumatic growth
·         Practices of meaning-making interventions: A comprehensive matrix
·         Working with meaning in life in chronic or life-threatening disease
·         Strategies for cultivating purpose among adolescents in clinical settings
·         Integrative meaning therapy: From logotherapy to existential positive interventions
·         Multiculturalism and meaning in existential and positive psychology
·         Nostalgia as an existential intervention: Using the past to secure meaning in the present and  the future
·         The spiritual dimension of meaning

Clinical Perspectives on Meaning redefines these core healing objectives for researchers, students, caregivers, and practitioners from the fields of existential psychology, logotherapy, and positive psychology, as well as for the interested public. (amazon)

Stories of Home: Place, Identity, Exile (ed. Devika Chawla et al., Lexington Books, 2017)

Notions of home are of increasing concern to persons who are interested in the unfolding narratives of inhabitation, displacement and dislocation, and exile. Home is viewed as a multidimensional theoretical concept that can have contradictory meanings; homes may be understood as spaces as well as places, and be associated with feelings, practices, and active states of being and moving in the world.

In this book, we offer a window into the distinct ways that home is theorized and conceptualized across disciplines. The essays in this volume pose and answer the following critical and communicative questions about home:

1) How do people “speak” and “story” home in their everyday lives? And why?
2) Why and how is home—as a material presence, as a sense and feeling, or as an absence—central to our notion of who we are, or who we want to become as individuals, and in relation to others?
3) What is the theoretical purchase in making home as a “unit of analysis” in our fields of study?

This collection engages home from diverse contexts and disparate philosophical underpinnings; at the same time the essays converse with each other by centering their foci on the relationship between home, place, identity, and exile. Home—how we experience it and what it that says about the “selves” we come to occupy—is an exigent question of our contemporary moment. Place, Identity, Exile: Storying Home Spaces delivers timely and critical perspectives on these important questions. (amazon)

Just Listening: Ethics and Therapy (Steven Gans, Leon Redler, Bob Mullan, 2001)

Just Listening: Ethics and Therapy, by Steven Gans, Leon Redler, Bob Mullan, Xlibris Corp, 2001

Just Listening: Ethics and Therapy is an edited record of conversations with Drs. Steven Gans and Leon Redler, American psychotherapists who studied and worked closely with Dr. R. D. Laing in London. One a philosopher, the other a physician and psychiatrist, they are also inspired and provoked by the ethical teachings of Emmanuel Levinas as well as by phenomenological and spiritual teachings of the east and west. The authors, passionately and thoughtfully concerned with the "Other", and with urgent matters of responsibility and justice, work daily with persons who are distressed and/or perplexed. Their conversations reveal the potency of an ethical therapy to inspire, heal and liberate.

The Therapist As Listener: Martin Heidegger And The Missing Dimension Of Counselling And Psychotherapy Training (Peter Wilberg, 2004)

The Therapist As Listener: Martin Heidegger And The Missing Dimension Of Counselling And Psychotherapy Training, by Peter Wilberg, New Gnosis Publications, 2004

Listening is clearly central to the practice of both counselling and psychotherapy. Given this, it is quite extraordinary how little thought has been given to the nature of therapeutic listening and to the cultivation and evaluation of the therapist as listener. Instead, listening is a subject marginalised in both the theoretical literature on psychotherapy and in the practical training of counsellors and psychotherapists .In this collection of essays and articles by Peter Wilberg, the thinking of Martin Heidegger provides the platform for an exploration of the deeper nature of listening - not simply as a passive prelude to therapeutic or diagnostic responses, but as a mode of active inner communication with others. What Wilberg calls Maieutic Listening is not a new form of psychotherapy, but the innately therapeutic essence of listening as such - understood not as a mere therapeutic 'skill' but as a our most basic way of being and bearing with others in pregnant silence. The Illness is the Cure - 2nd extended edition: an introduction to Life Medicine and Life Doctoring - a new existential approach to illness (Peter Wilberg, 2014)

The Illness is the Cure - 2nd extended edition: an introduction to Life Medicine and Life Doctoring - a new existential approach to illness, by Peter Wilberg, CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform; 2 ed, 2014

... Peter Wilberg's application of timeless wisdom to ... different aspects and areas of living shines new light, and brings important new information and perspective, to the topic areas themselves, and this new book is no exception. This approach often supplants misunderstanding, and/or fills in gaps and blind spots which currently exist in these topic areas, per the incomplete approaches of so-called conventional wisdom." By Living Unbound about the 1st edition. What if ‘the illness is the cure’ - and not something to be cured? In a way that is clear and practically helpful to both lay readers, patients and health professionals alike, this book challenges the most basic assumptions of almost all forms of medicine – ‘modern’ or ‘traditional’, ‘scientific’ or ‘spiritual’ – namely that illness is something to be cured rather than being the cure. To do so it draws on the work of Illich, Heidegger and many others to introduces a fundamentally new approach to health and illness – ‘Life Medicine’ and ‘Life Doctoring’. Life Doctoring is a new form of non-biomedical therapy for serious and chronic illness. Instead of employing standard forms of medical testing and treatment the Life Doctor is there to help the individual come to an understanding of the ways their own particular illness ‘is the cure’ – how it is a potential source of new healing understandings of themselves and of a healing transformation of their lives. Life Medicine is a new understanding of health and illness that does not separate science and life, biology and biography, the life of the human body and the life of the human being. Instead its focus is on the larger life context and specific life meanings that particular symptoms and illnesses hold for the individual patient. For as Marx wrote: “The idea of one basis for science and another for life is from the very outset a lie.” This ‘lie’ unfortunately has dire consequences. For as research by the medical establishment itself has confirmed, conventional biomedical diagnosis and treatment through drugs and surgery is itself the leading cause of premature death – ahead of both cancer and heart disease. By offering an entirely new framework for understanding the essential nature of ‘health’ and ‘illness’, Life Doctoring can help patients understand the underlying sense of ‘dis-ease’ in their lives that lies behind their clinically diagnosed illness or ‘disease’. In this way it can also serve to (a) prevent an individual’s ‘dis-ease manifesting as clinical ‘disease’, and (b) educate patients about the possible dangers and potentially sickness-causing or ‘iatrogenic’ effects of many standard forms of biomedical testing and treatment. The continuing monopoly over knowledge of the human body that biomedicine claims has one basic reason – namely that it is not actually ‘science-driven’ but ‘money driven’ – turning illness into a source of vast profits for Big Pharma and the corporate health industry as a whole. Many people are angered by the global trend toward the privatisation of medical care or else concerned about the rising costs. Yet the roots of this trend lie in the fact that illness itself has long been ‘privatised’ – seen as bearing no relation at all to the social and economic ills affecting the patient and to the sicknesses of society itself. To argue that ‘the illness is the cure’ is also to recognise that illness is also an expression of a fundamentally sick world. Through Life Medicine and Life Doctoring, illness can also help us to recognise and respond in new ways to this world and its politics - and in this way help to heal it. “The first task of the doctor is ... political…” Michel Foucault (amazon)

Being and Listening: Counselling, Psychoanalysis and the Ontology of Listening (Peter Wilberg 2013)

Being and Listening: Counselling, Psychoanalysis and the Ontology of Listening, by Peter Wilberg, CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2013

This book, the oldest and first of several publications by Peter Wilberg on the ontological dimension of listening in both psychotherapy and somatic medicine, is dedicated to the fulfilment of Martin Heidegger’s hope that his thinking would "…escape the confines of the philosopher’s study and become of benefit to wider circles, in particular to a large number of suffering human beings." The German word for listening (zuhören) belongs to a family of words including ‘to hear’ (hören), to belong (gehören) and ‘belonging together’ (Zugehörigkeit). The essential unity or ‘belonging together’ of ‘Being and Listening’ was nowhere more strikingly affirmed than in a saying of the German thinker Martin Heidegger: “We hear, not the ear.” This saying indicates that it is not bodies or ears but beings that hear. It also hints at a dimension of ‘belonging together’ or ‘we-ness’ in the activity of hearing and of listening. For how a human being addresses us, what they say to us – and the manner in which they say it – is itself and already a response to the way in which we are or are not listening to and ‘hearing’ them – the wavelength of our listening attunement to them. Conversely, as Heidegger goes on to say: “...if we hear, something is not merely added to what the ear picks up; rather, what the ear perceives and how it perceives will already be attuned (gestimmt) and determined (bestimmt) by what we hear...” Such a Heideggerian ‘language of listening’, which speaks in a German vocabulary, may be unfamiliar to those whose approach to counselling is shaped by terminologies derived from Freud, Rogers or new ‘cognitive’ therapies. Yet it has a power to radically deepen our experience of what we call ‘listening’; allowing us to understand it merely as a prelude to some form of therapeutic response – nor as a one among other counselling ‘skills’ or ‘techniques’ – but rather as our most primordial way of ‘being with’ and ‘bearing with’ another human being in pregnant silence. It through this capacity to patiently ‘be’ and ‘bear with’ another person’s suffering that they in turn can come to be with and ‘bear’ it in a more patient way – thus granting it time to bear forth or give birth, not just to newly felt questions and insights, but to a whole ‘inner bearing’ towards their life world and relationships, i.e. to a new way of being – one itself rooted in a new way of listening. Heidegger, Medicine And 'Scientific Method': The Unheeded Message Of Tht Zollikon Seminars (Peter Wilberg 2003)

Heidegger, Medicine And 'Scientific Method': The Unheeded Message Of Tht Zollikon Seminars, by Peter Wilberg, New Gnosis Publications, 2003

The aim of Heidegger, Medicine and 'Scientific Method' is to ensure that the profound implications of the Zollikon Seminars Heidegger held for doctors and psychiatrists do not remain unheeded. In one short volume Peter Wilberg concisely summarises Heidegger's fundamental critique of 'scientific method', redefines the basic principles of the 'phenomenological method' and lays out the foundations of a new 'phenomenological' approach to medicine - one which understands that illnesses have meanings not 'causes'. Grounded in Heidegger's fundamental distinction between the physical body (Körper) and the 'lived' or 'felt' body (Leib), phenomenological medicine offers a highly practical and therapeutic understanding of the relation between a patient's clinical disease 'pathology' and the felt 'dis-ease' or pathos that it embodies. The Gate of Darkness: Studies on the Leftist Literary Movement (Tsi-an Hsia 2016)

This volume of essays, posthumously edited by the author's brother Chih-tsing Hsia (1921–2013), a prominent Columbia University professor of Chinese literature, focuses on Chinese literary criticism relating to the work of leftist Chinese writers, most notably Lu Hsün (Lu Xun), as well as Chiang Kuang-tz'u, the "Five Martyrs," and Ch'iu Ch'iu-po. Through a critical overview of the aesthetics and politics of China's leftist literary movement, The Gate of Darkness examines the conflicting dilemmas between leftist authors' own ideals and the strict ideological frameworks imposed by the propaganda policies of the Chinese Communist Party in the early twentieth century.

(books.com.tw 2018-6-10)

Personality Stability From Age 14 to Age 77 Years (Harris et al. 2016)

Harris, M. A., Brett, C. E., Johnson, W. and Deary, I. J. (2016) Personality Stability from Age 14 to Age 77 Years. Psychology and Aging, 31(8), pp. 862–874.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5144810/pdf/pag_31_8_862.pdf

Abstract

There is evidence for differential stability in personality trait differences, even over decades. The authors used data from a sample of the Scottish Mental Survey, 1947 to study personality stability from childhood to older age. The 6-Day Sample (N = 1,208) were rated on six personality characteristics by their teachers at around age 14. In 2012, the authors traced as many of these participants as possible and invited them to take part in a follow-up study. Those who agreed (N = 174) completed a questionnaire booklet at age 77 years, which included rating themselves and asking someone who knew them well to rate them on the same 6 characteristics on which they were rated in adolescence. Each set of 6 ratings was reduced to the same single underlying factor, denoted dependability, a trait comparable to conscientiousness. Participants’ and others’ older-age personality characteristic ratings were moderately correlated with each other, and with other measures of personality and wellbeing, but correlations suggested no significant stability of any of the 6 characteristics or their underlying factor, dependability, over the 63-year interval. However, a more complex model, controlling rater effects, indicated significant 63-year stability of 1 personality characteristic, Stability of Moods, and near-significant stability of another, Conscientiousness. Results suggest that lifelong differential stability of personality is generally quite low, but that some aspects of personality in older age may relate to personality in childhood.

The Political Self: Understanding the Social Context for Mental Illness (Rod Tweedy 2016)

This book explores how our social and economic contexts profoundly affect our mental health and wellbeing, and how modern neuroscientific and psychodynamic research can both contribute to and enrich our understanding of these wider discussions. It therefore looks both inside and outside - indeed one of the main themes of The Political Self is that the conceptually discrete categories of 'inner' and 'outer' in reality constantly interact, shape, and inform each other. Severing these two worlds, it suggests, has led both to a devitalised and dissociated form of politics, and to a disengaged and disempowering form of therapy and analysis. With contributions by: Joel Bakan, John Beveridge, Nick Duffell, Sue Gerhardt, Dave Grossman, James Hillman, Joel Kovel, Iain McGilchrist, Jonathan Rowson, David Smail, Nick Totton, and Michael Ventura (amazon) (kindle not sure when)

Depression and the Erosion of the Self in Late Modernity: The Lesson of Icarus (Barbara Dowds 2018-4-19)

Depression is not a disease of the brain, a genetic disability or even a mood disorder. Rather, shutdown, numbness or sadness are non-pathological adaptations to adverse childhood and adult environments. This challenging book thus understands depression as a wise response to an unliveable situation. It can teach us what is wrong with our lives and what we must learn in order to go beyond symptom relief and reconnect to our most fundamental needs, relational, existential and spiritual. Because moods shape how we engage with our outer and inner worlds, they underlie all human behaviour. If the sociocultural world is toxic or frustrates our core needs, we will withdraw to protect ourselves. Those who have encountered a non-facilitating environment in childhood will be even more sensitive to adult stresses, since their self-organisation is fragile and non-resilient. As depression is so complex, understanding it demands an integrative approach. (amazon) (kindle 2018-6-6)

Cool Tools: A Catalog of Possibilities (Kevin Kelly 2013-12-17)

Cool Tools is a highly curated selection of the best tools available for individuals and small groups. Tools include hand tools, maps, how-to books, vehicles, software, specialized devices, gizmos, websites -- and anything useful. Tools are selected and presented in the book if they are the best of kind, the cheapest, or the only thing available that will do the job. This is an oversized book which reviews over 1,500 different tools, explaining why each one is great, and what its benefits are. Indirectly the book illuminates the possibilities contained in such tools and the whole catalog serves an education outside the classroom. The content in this book was derived from ten years of user reviews published at the Cool Tools website, cool-tools.org. (amazon) (kindle 2018-6-6)
