The Deep Ecology Platform (Critical Psychotherapy) (Daseinsanalysis)

http://www.deepecology.org/platform.htm

http://forhumanliberation.blogspot.com/2009/07/eight-points-of-deep-ecology.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arne_N%C3%A6ss (Arne Naess, 1912-2009)

1. The well-being and flourishing of human and nonhuman life on Earth have value in themselves (synonyms: inherent worth, intrinsic value, inherent value). These values are independent of the usefulness of the nonhuman world for human purposes.
2. Richness and diversity of life forms contribute to the realization of these values and are also values in themselves.
3. Humans have no right to reduce this richness and diversity except to satisfy vital needs.
4. Present human interference with the nonhuman world is excessive, and the situation is rapidly worsening.
5. The flourishing of human life and cultures is compatible with a substantial decrease of the human population. The flourishing of nonhuman life requires such a decrease.
6. Policies must therefore be changed. The changes in policies affect basic economic, technological, and ideological structures. The resulting state of affairs will be deeply different from the present.
7. The ideological change is mainly that of appreciating life quality (dwelling in situations of inherent worth) rather than adhering to an increasingly higher standard of living. There will be a profound awareness of the difference between big and great.
8. Those who subscribe to the foregoing points have an obligation directly or indirectly to participate in the attempt to implement the necessary changes.    —   Arne Naess and George Sessions (1984)

to think differently, individuals must first be able to live differently (Critical Psychotherapy) (Daseinsanalysis)

... in a reconciled condition, human beings would grant proximity to the “beautiful alien” (no, nature is not alien, it is "beautiful LIFE") (das schone Fremde), while simultaneously allowing the alien Other to remain “distant and different, beyond the heterogeneous and beyond that which is one’s own” (ND 191).

However, reconciliation cannot be achieved by means of thought alone.

Non- identity thinking is not sufficient for reconciliation because reconciliation ultimately depends on altering the relationship between an equally problematic iteration of universal and particular, namely the relationship between society and the individuals it comprises. As Chapter 4 will show, to think differently, individuals must first be able to live differently. (ibid, p. 90)

now, this is encouraging

back to nature means i am nature itself as an embodied being (Critical Psychotherapy) (Daseinsanalysis)

In Adorno’s version of the master–slave dialectic, the slave will win her freedom, not by viewing herself as completely distinct from nature (as her male masters have done), but by gaining a fuller
appreciation of the extent to which she depends on nature as an embodied being. (ibid, p. 89)

that is to say, to redeem nature, is to redeem me, and you

nature has been the Other (Critical Psychotherapy) (Dasinesanalysis)

More generally, all forms of oppression involve casting groups and individuals as Other than what the oppressor is. And, in human history, nature has played the role of Other par excellence.

It is therefore not surprising that, when individuals and groups are marginalized within, or excluded from, society, they are oft en portrayed as bestial or animal- like, inhuman or not fully human, instinctive and irrational. In virtually all cases, the oppressor targets an individual or group as merely natural.

For example, in totalitarian movements such as Nazism (or CCP), members monopolize “all the so- called sublime and lofty concepts, while the terms they use for what they persecute and destroy–base, insect- like, filthy, subhuman and all the rest–they treat as anathema” (MCP 123) (ibid, p. 88)

so, back to nature implies emancipation, historically

back to nature ? (Critical Psychotherapy) (Daseinsanalysis)

Adorno contends that prospects for transforming late capitalist society into a realm of freedom presuppose the experience of identity as “a universally coercive mechanism which we … ultimately need in order to free ourselves from universal coercion, just as freedom can come to be real only through coercive civilization, not by way of any ‘Back to nature’” (ND 147).(ibid, 87)

of course that "back" is not going to a cozy one, that's why van life in the off-grid backcountry is a good exercise, ask Chad or Chrome, they would heartily agree

nature's wounds (Critical Psychotherapy)

Bernstein too emphasizes the moral dimension of this task, arguing that “[n]egative dialectics as a whole is a response to damaged sensuous particularity” (2001: 361).

Indeed, Adorno describes truth in a more emphatic way when he asserts that the condition of all truth lies in “the need to lend a voice to suffering” (ND 17). Philosophy can do “justice to the experience of nature only when … it incorporates nature’s wounds” (AT 68).

To return to a remark made by Stone, constellations lend a voice to suffering by showing that natural things “have been damaged, prevented from existing in their spontaneous forms” (Stone 2006: 243). (ibid, pp. 85-86)

sedimentation of history (Critical Psychotherapy)

Stone offers a more historically sensitive gloss on the rationale behind the deployment of constellations when she focuses on the following assertion: “Becoming aware of the constellation in which a thing stands is tantamount to deciphering the constellation which, having come to be, the thing bears within itself ” (ND 163).

For Adorno, “the specificity of any thing consists in the sedimentation of history in it”. In the course of history, “any thing enters into multiple relations with other things; each such relation shapes and marks this thing; each thing, therefore, exists as a precipitate of its complex history”.

Optimally, concepts will provide “a chart or map” of these “sedimented past relations” (ibid, pp. 84-85)

do what the miner's adage forbids (Critical Psychotherapy)

In another vivid metaphor Adorno states that critical thinkers must do “what the miner’s adage forbids: work their way through the darkness without a lamp, without possessing the positive through the higher concept of the negation of the negation, and immerse themselves in the darkness as deeply as they possibly can” (MCP 144). (idid, p. 81)

scary, isn't it

constellation of concepts (Critical Psychotherapy)

In the course of this discussion of the role of determinate negation in non- identity thinking, I may have given the impression that non- identity thinking consists in wielding emphatic concepts in an isolated and piece meal fashion.

This impression can be corrected by examining a dense and elliptical section of Negative Dialectics where Adorno proposes that constellations of concepts be deployed to apprehend objects (ND 162–3) (ibid, p. 84)

now, this constellation of concepts, is critical psychotherapy per se

determined negation (Critical Psychotherapy)

Th is idea reappears in a 1969 radio lecture, “Critique”, where Adorno offers his own variation on Baruch Spinoza’s famous proposition: all determination is negation. In response to Spinoza’s claim that truth is an index sui et falsi, Adorno counters that “the false, once determinately known and precisely expressed, is already an index of what is right and better” (1998b: 288) (Adorno on Nature, Deborah Cook, 2011, p. 79)

(Daseinsanalysis)

(Dasinesanalysis)

NON- IDENTITY THINKING

As opposed to identifying a thing with a concept, non- identity thinking “seeks to say what something is”. Remarking on the apparent contradiction, Adorno concedes that, in saying “it is”, non- identity thinking does identify; it even identifies to a greater extent than identity thinking. But non- identity thinking identifies in other ways because it does not merely classify objects by subsuming them under universal concepts (ND 149). To cite Husserl’ well- known dictum, non- identity thinking aims at the things themselves; it immerses itself in “things that are heterogeneous to it, without placing those things in prefabricated categories” (ND 13). Rather than philosophizing about concrete things, Adorno asserts, “we are to philosophize … out of these things” (ND 33). When it philosophizes out of things, non- identity thinking transcends concepts by disclosing elements of affinity between its concepts and non- conceptual objects – an affinity that makes concept formation possible in the first place. In non- identity thinking, these “elements of affinity – of the object itself to the thought of it – come to live in identity” (ND 149).

Non- identity thinking attempts to show that non- conceptuality is inalienable from the concept (ND 137). As Bernstein remarks, non- identity thinking is more fully self- aware precisely because it acknowledges that concepts are immersed in, and part of, the natural world (2001: 291). In fact, Bernstein believes that non- identity thinking marks an “axial turn” towards objects (ibid.: 233). The direction of conceptuality should be turned towards non- conceptuality because concepts are not just generated in our embodied contact with material things, but continue to evoke these things owing to their meaning in which their mediation by the non- conceptual survives (ND 12). In what follows, however, I shall argue that it is not sufficient to focus on this axial turn; non- identity thinking involves more than a turn towards the non- conceptual.

Constellation (Adorno) (Critical Psychotherapy)

https://muse.jhu.edu/article/48415

https://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/oi/authority.20110803095633862

Walter Benjamin famously proposed in the ‘Epistemo-Critical Prologue’ to Ursprung des deutschen Trauerspiels (1928), translated as The Origin of German Tragic Drama (1977), that ideas are to objects as constellations are to stars.

That is to say, ideas are no more present in the world than constellations actually exist in the heavens, but like constellations they enable us to perceive relations between objects. It also means ideas are not the same as concepts, nor can they be construed as the laws of concepts. Ideas do not give rise to knowledge about phenomena and phenomena cannot be used to measure their validity. This is not to say the constellation is purely subjective or all in our heads. The stars in the night sky are where they are regardless of how we look at them and there is something in how they are positioned above us that suggests the image we construct of them. But having said that, the names we use for constellations are embedded in history, tradition and myth. So the constellation is simultaneously subjective and objective in nature. It is not, however, a system, and this is its true significance for Benjamin, who rejects the notion that philosophy can be thought of as systemic, as though it were mathematical or scientific instead of discursive. Benjamin developed this notion further in his account of the arcades in 19th-century Paris.

Theodor Adorno adopts and adapts constellation in his account of negative dialectics, transforming it into a model. The notion of constellation allows for a depiction of the relation between ideas that gives individual ideas their autonomy but does not thereby plunge them into a state of isolated anomie.

Adorno 筆記 (Critical Psychotherapy)

Natural History
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xC4Axp0gbqLtINbFHnp7Obn0qNAJgOFL/view?usp=sharing

Adorno contends that individuals should become more fully conscious of themselves as embodied and instinctual creatures. Critical selfreflection – reflection on nature in the self – is the hallmark of a more enlightened form of reason and the harbinger of freedom. (Adorno on Nature, Deborah Cook, 2011, p. 4)

(Autonoetic Consciousness)

Adorno also admits that his negative dialectics resembles Hegel’s dialectics in one respect: it too is circular, but only to the extent that unfolding a concept (die Entfaltung des Begriffs) involves reaching back to the non-conceptual objects that spawned it, and to which it continues to refer, in such a way that the differences between concept and object are not submerged, or do not “perish”, in the concept.

(In the thinking Adorno champions, a concept should “lead to its otherness without absorbing that
otherness” (ND 157) (ibid, p. 64)

Adorno believes that non-identity thinking may help to redeem damaged life.

In this respect, non-identity thinking is a form of metaphysics because metaphysics “is always also an attempt to rescue something”, or to save by means of concepts what appears to be threatened by concepts (MCP 19). With non-identity thinking, Adorno wants to use concepts to forge a path towards the fragments and ruins of wounded nature with the aim of rescuing nature from its misappropriation in identity thinking. (ibid, p. 65)

Passion for Nothing: Kierkegaard's Apophatic Theology (Peter Kline, Fortress Press, 2017)

Passion for Nothing offers a reading of Kierkegaard as an apophatic author. As it functions in this book, "apophasis" is a flexible term inclusive of both "negative theology" and "deconstruction." One of the main points of this volume is that Kierkegaard's authorship opens pathways between these two resonate but often contentiously related terrains.
The main contention of this book is that Kierkegaard's apophaticism is an ethical-religious difficulty, one that concerns itself with the "whylessness" of existence. This is a theme that Kierkegaard inherits from the philosophical and theological traditions stemming from Meister Eckhart. Additionally, the forms of Kierkegaard's writing are irreducibly apophatic-animated by a passion to communicate what cannot be said.
The book examines Kierkegaard's apophaticism with reference to five themes: indirect communication, God, faith, hope, and love. Across each of these themes, the aim is to lend voice to "the unruly energy of the unsayable" and, in doing so, let Kierkegaard's theological, spiritual, and philosophical provocation remain a living one for us today. Thinking with Adorno: The Uncoercive Gaze (Gerhard Richter, Fordham University Press, 2019) (Critical Psychotherapy)

What Theodor W. Adorno says cannot be separated from how he says it. By the same token, what he thinks cannot be isolated from how he thinks it. The central aim of Richter’s book is to examine how these basic yet far-reaching assumptions teach us to think with Adorno―both alongside him and in relation to his diverse contexts and constellations. These contexts and constellations range from aesthetic theory to political critique, from the problem of judgment to the difficulty of inheriting a tradition, from the primacy of the object to the question of how to lead a right life within a wrong one.

Richter vividly shows how Adorno’s highly suggestive―yet often overlooked―concept of the “uncoercive gaze” designates a specific kind of comportment in relation to an object of critical analysis: It moves close to the object and tarries with it while struggling to decipher the singularities and non-identities that are lodged within it, whether the object is an idea, a thought, a concept, a text, a work of art, an experience, or a problem of political or sociological theory.

Thinking with Adorno’s uncoercive gaze not only means following the fascinating paths of his own work; it also means extending hospitality to the ghostly voices of others. As this book shows, Adorno is best understood as a thinker in dialogue, whether with long-deceased predecessors in the German tradition such as Kant and Hegel, with writers such as Kafka, with contemporaries such as Benjamin and Arendt, or with philosophical voices that succeeded him, such as those of Derrida and Agamben.

但我先前說過 is psychotherapy (and psychoanalysis) proustian or kafkaesque ?

Milan Kundera – a modern existentialist? Or: Why "The Joke" is not an existential novel (Rebecca Steltner, GRIN Verlag, 2007)

Essay from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: A, University of Kent, course: Philosophy in Literature, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English.

abstract:

Milan Kundera’s novel "The Joke" abounds in existentialist vocabulary and themes. His main character’s narrative is loaded with such expressions as choiceandexistence, self-deceptionorfreedom,which are sometimes even set in Italics. These are not just words, that Ludvik uses in his narrative, they are also made themes in themselves as well as reoccurring motifs - for example that of the ‘destruction of façades’. These themes are important, from the very beginning as we have the basic condition of someone ‘crossing the border’, which is not altogether dissimilar to Roquentin’s predicament in Sartre’s La Nausée.

All situations, that Kundera’s characters find themselves in are existential, too, in such a way, that they require choices and a wholly new perspective on the past after the destruction of old value systems. It is therefore obvious that existentialist ideas must have influenced and inspired Kundera, and as Existentialism is in itself a philosophy that focuses greatly on perception and the possibility of self-knowledge, one could even propose to say, that its ideas are always also central to modern novel writing especially when we look at psychological novels and first-person narratives.

However, (I would argue that)The Joke is by no means an existentialist novel, as its approach to ideas is by no means direct, but playful as well as critical. This is why it is impossible, to say, that for example, the novel reflects on the nature of self-deception, and its main character is in ‘bad faith’. Such an approach, does not do the novel justice, and at this point it may well be worth remembering, that its author, too, resists such an attempt:
“My disgust for those who reduce a work to its ideas: my revulsion at being dragged into what they call ‘discussions of ideas.’ My despair at this era befogged with ideas and indifferent to works.” (Art of the Novel, p. 131).
Now, let me first quickly define, what I understand by ‘existentialist novel’ before we can then look at a few actual passages and maybe reach the above verdict.
Existentialists, like Sartre, have always used fiction to convey their ideas. According to Edith Kern, Simone de Beauvoir even thought of the novel as the most appropriate means of presenting existentialist thought: “The novel seemed to her [Simone de Beauvoir] particularly suited to the expression of existential insights which would seem contradictory if they were to be presented categorically and systematically.” (amazon)

Adorno on Nature (Deborah Cook, Routledge, 2014) (Daseinsanalysis)

Decades before the environmental movement emerged in the 1960s, Adorno condemned our destructive and self-destructive relationship to the natural world, warning of the catastrophe that may result if we continue to treat nature as an object that exists exclusively for our own benefit. "Adorno on Nature" presents the first detailed examination of the pivotal role of the idea of natural history in Adorno's work. A comparison of Adorno's concerns with those of key ecological theorists - social ecologist Murray Bookchin, ecofeminist Carolyn Merchant, and deep ecologist Arne Naess - reveals how Adorno speaks directly to many of today's most pressing environmental issues. Ending with a discussion of the philosophical conundrum of unity in diversity, "Adorno on Nature" also explores how social solidarity can be promoted as a necessary means of confronting environmental problems. Adorno and Existence (Peter E. Gordon, Harvard University Press, 2016) (Daseinsanalysis)

From the beginning to the end of his career, the philosopher Theodor W. Adorno sustained an uneasy but enduring bond with existentialism. His attitude overall was that of unsparing criticism, verging on polemic. In Kierkegaard he saw an early paragon for the late flowering of bourgeois solipsism; in Heidegger, an impresario for a “jargon of authenticity” cloaking its idealism in an aura of pseudo-concreteness and neo-romantic kitsch. Even in the straitened rationalism of Husserl’s phenomenology Adorno saw a vain attempt to break free from the prison-house of consciousness.
“Gordon, in a detailed, sensitive, fair-minded way, leads the reader through Adorno’s various, usually quite vigorous, rhetorically pointed attacks on both transcendental and existential phenomenology from 1930 on…[A] singularly illuminating study.”
―Robert Pippin, Critical Inquiry
“Gordon’s book offers a significant contribution to our understanding of Adorno’s thought. He writes with expertise, authority, and compendious scholarship, moving with confidence across the thinkers he examines…After this book, it will not be possible to explain Adorno’s philosophical development without serious consideration of [Gordon’s] reactions to them.”

Jan Patočka (1907-1977)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Pato%C4%8Dka

In January 1977 he became one of the original signatories and main spokespersons for the Charter 77 (Charta 77) human rights movement in Czechoslovakia. For the three months after the Charter was released he was intensely active writing and speaking about the meaning of the Charter, in spite of his deteriorating health. He was also interrogated by the police regarding his involvement with the Charter movement. On March 3, 1977 he was held by the police for ten hours, who had claimed that he would be allowed to speak in his role as a Charter spokesperson with a high-ranking official (in fact, this was a pretext to keep him from attending a reception at the West German embassy[3]). He fell ill that evening and was taken to the hospital, where his health briefly improved, enabling him to give one final interview with Die Zeit and to write one final essay entitled "What We Can Expect from Charter 77." On March 11 he relapsed, and on March 13 he died of apoplexy, at the age of 69.

Maurice Blanchot: A Critical Biography (Christophe Bident (Author), John McKeane (Translator), Fordham University Press, 2018)

Maurice Blanchot (1907–2003) was one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. His novels, shorter narratives, literary criticism, and fragmentary texts exercised enormous influence over several generations of writers, artists, and philosophers. In works such as Thomas the Obscure, The Instant of my Death, The Writing of the Disaster, The Unavowable Community, Blanchot produced some of the most incisive statements of what it meant to experience the traumas and turmoils of the twentieth century.

As a journalist and political activist, Blanchot had a public side that coexisted uneasily with an inclination to secrecy, a refusal of interviews and photographs, and a reputation for mysteriousness and seclusion. These public and private Blanchots came together in complicated ways at some of the twentieth century's most momentous occasions. He was among the public intellectuals participating in the May ’68 revolution in Paris and helped organize opposition to the Algerian war. During World War II, he found himself moments away from being executed by the Nazis. More controversially, he had been active in far-right circles in the ’30s.

Now translated into English, Christophe Bident’s magisterial, scrupulous, much-praised critical biography provides the first full-length account of Blanchot’s itinerary, drawing on unpublished letters and on interviews with the writer’s close friends. But the book is both a biography and far more. Beyond filling out a life famous for its obscurity, Bident’s book will transform the way readers of Blanchot respond to this major intellectual figure by offering a genealogy of his thought, a distinctive trajectory that is at once imaginative and speculative, at once aligned with literary modernity and a close companion and friend to philosophy.

The book is also a historical work, unpacking the ‘transformation of convictions’ of an author who moved from the far-right in the 1930s to the far-left in the 1950s and after. Bident’s extensive archival research explores the complex ways that Blanchot’s work enters into engagement with his contemporaries, making the book also a portrait of the circles in which he moved, which included friends such as Georges Bataille, Marguerite Duras, Emmanuel Levinas, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Derrida.

Finally, the book traces the strong links between Blanchot’s life and an oeuvre that nonetheless aspires to anonymity. Ultimately, Bident shows how Blanchot’s life itself becomes an oeuvre―becomes a literature that bears the traces of that life secretly. In its even-handed appraisal, Bident’s sophisticated reading of Blanchot’s life together with his work offers a much-needed corrective to the range of cruder accounts, whether from Blanchot’s detractors or from his champions, of a life too easily sensationalized.

This definitive biography of a seminal figure of our time will be essential reading for anyone concerned with twentieth-century literature, thought, culture, and politics. (amazon) (accessible via questia)

50 Concepts for a Critical Phenomenology (Gail Weiss. et al, Northwestern University Press, 2019)

Phenomenology, the philosophical method that seeks to uncover the taken-for-granted presuppositions, habits, and norms that structure everyday experience, is increasingly framed by ethical and political concerns. Critical phenomenology foregrounds experiences of marginalization, oppression, and power in order to identify and transform common experiences of injustice that render “the familiar” a site of oppression for many. In Fifty Concepts for a Critical Phenomenology, leading scholars present fresh readings of classic phenomenological topics and introduce newer concepts developed by feminist theorists, critical race theorists, disability theorists, and queer and trans theorists that capture aspects of lived experience that have traditionally been neglected. By centering historically marginalized perspectives, the chapters in this book breathe new life into the phenomenological tradition and reveal its ethical, social, and political promise. This volume will be an invaluable resource for teaching and research in continental philosophy; feminist, gender, and sexuality studies; critical race theory; disability studies; cultural studies; and critical theory more generally. Approaching Disappearance (Dalkey Archive Scholarly) (Anne McConnell, Dalkey Archive Press, 2013)

Maurice Blanchot (1907-2003), one of the most influential figures of twentieth-century French literature, produced a wide variety of essays and fictions that reflect on the complexities of literary work. His description of writing continually returns to a number of themes, such as solitude, passivity, indifference, anonymity, and absence—forces confronting the writer, but also the reader, the text itself, and the relations between the three. For Blanchot, literature involves a movement toward disappearance, where one risks the loss of self; but such a sacrifice, says Blanchot, is inherent in the act of writing. Approaching Disappearance explores the question of disappearance in Blanchot's critical work and then turns to five narratives that offer a unique reflection on the threat of disappearance and the demands of literature—work by Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, Louis-René Des Forêts, and Nathalie Sarraute. Routledge Handbook of Identity Studies, 2nd Edition (ed. Anthony Elliott, Routledge, 2019) (Critical Psychotherapy)

In this comprehensive, accessible handbook, acclaimed social theorist Anthony Elliott brings together internationally distinguished and emergent scholars in the social sciences and humanities to review the major theoretical traditions, trends and trajectories in the hugely popular field of identity studies.
The Routledge Handbook of Identity Studies set new standards for reference works when first published, such was the far-reaching sweep of topics discussed – including identity studies reconfigured by feminism, post-structuralism and postmodernism, individualization theories, media and cultural studies, race and ethnicity, consumerism, environmentalism, post-colonialism, globalization and many more.
This second edition of the handbook contains new contributions, including an updated general introduction from Anthony Elliott on the fast-changing conditions and contours of identity transformations in the global age. There are also new chapters on the emergence of posthuman identities - with specific focus on the global consequences of biotechnology, biomedicine, robotics and artificial intelligence for the analysis of identity - and on identity mobilities. Finlayson, James Gordon (2012) On not being silent in the darkness: Adorno's singular apophaticism. Harvard Theological Review, 105 (1). pp. 1-32. ISSN 0017-8160

Abstract

Adorno's late work has often been compared to negative theology, yet there is little serious discussion of this comparison in the secondary literature. In most of the existing discussions virtually nothing is said about negative theology, as if it is obvious what it is and what the parallels with Adorno's ideas are. The truth is that negative theology is not self-evident, and neither are the parallels with Adorno at all obvious. To find out what they are would require a detailed account of both. In this article I shall make a start in this direction

positive identity vs negative identity (Critical Psychotherapy)

Giacometti

Adorno

Fromm
to have or to be 他是選擇後者的

Adorno

(Daseinsanalysis)

Theodor Adorno and the Century of Negative Identity (Eric Oberle, Stanford University Press, 2018) (Critical Psychotherapy)

Identity has become a central feature of national conversations: identity politics and identity crises are the order of the day. We celebrate identity when it comes to personal freedom and group membership, and we fear the power of identity when it comes to discrimination, bias, and hate crimes. Drawing on Isaiah Berlin's famous distinction between positive and negative liberty, Theodor Adorno and the Century of Negative Identity argues for the necessity of acknowledging a dialectic within the identity concept. Exploring the intellectual history of identity as a social idea, Eric Oberle shows the philosophical importance of identity's origins in American exile from Hitler's fascism. Positive identity was first proposed by Frankfurt School member Erich Fromm, while negative identity was almost immediately put forth as a counter-concept by Fromm's colleague, Theodor Adorno. Oberle explains why, in the context of the racism, authoritarianism, and the hard-right agitation of the 1940s, the invention of a positive concept of identity required a theory of negative identity. This history in turn reveals how autonomy and objectivity can be recovered within a modern identity structured by domination, alterity, ontologized conflict, and victim blaming. On the Reproduction of Capitalism: Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses (Louis Althusser, Verso, 2014)

Louis Althusser’s renowned short text ‘Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses’ radically transformed the concept of the subject, the understanding of the state and even the very frameworks of cultural, political and literary theory. The text has influenced thinkers such as Judith Butler, Ernesto Laclau and Slavoj Žižek.

The piece is, in fact, an extract from a much longer book, On the Reproduction of Capitalism, until now unavailable in English. Its publication makes possible a reappraisal of seminal Althusserian texts already available in English, their place in Althusser’s oeuvre and the relevance of his ideas for contemporary theory. On the Reproduction of Capitalism develops Althusser’s conception of historical materialism, outlining the conditions of reproduction in capitalist society and the revolutionary struggle for its overthrow.

Written in the afterglow of May 1968, the text addresses a question that continues to haunt us today: in a society that proclaims its attachment to the ideals of liberty and equality, why do we witness the ever-renewed reproduction of relations of domination? Both a conceptually innovative text and a key theoretical tool for activists, On the Reproduction of Capitalism is an essential addition to the corpus of the twentieth-century Left. (Critical Psychotherapy)

(Daseinsanalysis)

Building and Dwelling: Ethics for the City (Richard Sennett, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2018)

A preeminent thinker redefines the meaning of city life and charts a way forward

Building and Dwelling is the definitive statement on cities by the renowned public intellectual Richard Sennett. In this sweeping work, he traces the anguished relation between how cities are built and how people live in them, from ancient Athens to twenty-first-century Shanghai. He shows how Paris, Barcelona, and New York City assumed their modern forms; rethinks the reputations of Jane Jacobs, Lewis Mumford, and others; and takes us on a tour of emblematic contemporary locations, from the backstreets of Medellín, Colombia, to the Google headquarters in Manhattan. Through it all, he laments that the “closed city”―segregated, regimented, and controlled―has spread from the global North to the exploding urban agglomerations of the global South. As an alternative, he argues for the “open city,” where citizens actively hash out their differences and planners experiment with urban forms that make it easier for residents to cope. Rich with arguments that speak directly to our moment―a time when more humans live in urban spaces than ever before―Building and Dwelling draws on Sennett’s deep learning and intimate engagement with city life to form a bold and original vision for the future of cities. 2:50 AM 第二天 (Critical Psychotherapy)

(The Death of Character) (James Davison Hunter, 2001; Elinor Fuchs, 1996)
The Corrosion of Character (Richard Sennett, 2011)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B_movie

Critical Theory Today: A User-Friendly Guide 3rd Edition (Lois Tyson, Routledge, 2014)

This thoroughly updated third edition of Critical Theory Today offers an accessible introduction to contemporary critical theory, providing in-depth coverage of the most common approaches to literary analysis today, including: feminism; psychoanalysis; Marxism; reader-response theory; New Criticism; structuralism and semiotics; deconstruction; new historicism and cultural criticism; lesbian, gay, and queer theory; African American criticism and postcolonial criticism.
This new edition features:
  • a major expansion of the chapter on postcolonial criticism that includes topics such as Nordicism, globalization and the ‘end’ of postcolonial theory, global tourism and global conservation
  • an extended explanation of each theory, using examples from everyday life, popular culture, and literary texts
  • a list of specific questions critics ask about literary texts
  • an interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby through the lens of each theory
  • a list of questions for further practice to guide readers in applying each theory to different literary works
  • updated and expanded bibliographies
Both engaging and rigorous, this is a "how-to" book for undergraduate and graduate students new to critical theory and for college professors who want to broaden their repertoire of critical approaches to literature. (amazon)

Psychological Politics of the American Dream: The Commodification of Subjectivity in Twentieth-Century American Literature (Lois Tyson, Ohio State Univ Pr, 1994)

Because literature is a repository of both a society's ideologies and its psychological conflicts, it has the capacity to reveal aspects of a culture's collective psyche: the ways in which ideological investments reveal the nature of individuals' psychological relationship to the world. While it is reasonable to assume that our national literature would offer a fertile field in which to explore the interaction between the ideological and psychological dimensions of American life, critics generally have kept these two domains separate, and the dominant model has consisted of an archaic notion of the individual in society. The two are seen as interactive but essentially discrete entities, often in polarized opposition in which the autonomous individual is a victim of an antagonistic American society.

Lois Tyson's ground-breaking work, Psychological Politics of the American Dream, seeks to draw together these disparate spheres by applying a new dialectical model of existential subjectivity to five representative works of twentieth-century American literature: Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, and Joseph Heller's Something Happened. While previous literary analyses frequently portray the individuals in these works in opposition to society, Tyson ably demonstrates that the texts instead reveal the intersection of psyche - or the self as a product of individual psychological experience - and the socius - or the self as social product - in the American dream, which through its inherent relation to commodification responds to our desire to escape existential inwardness: that anxious awareness of ourselves as creatures, in Heidegger's words, whose "very being is at issue" in an uncertain world.

These five works illustrate the diversity and complexity of the psychological realities American literature can reveal, given a model of subjectivity adequate to the task. Taken together, they point to a growing collusion of psyche and socius: the desire to escape existential inwardness becomes an increasingly "viable" project with the increasing commodification of American national culture. being vs. self (2020-11-28) (Daseinsanalysis)
