in order to sing
If we come to look at the evolution of language, we find further puzzles. Why do we have language at all? Surely, in order to communicate. And if not that, then at least to think. But neither of these propositions is true.
The fact that humans can speak is dependent on the evolution, not just of the brain, but of the articulating apparatus – the larynx, the tongue and so on – and of respiratory control. That is why birds can imitate human speech, whereas apes, our nearest relatives, cannot: birds have the necessary equipment, in order to be able to sing. Through some fascinating detective work we can tell from looking at human skeletons when it was that the necessary developments in control of the tongue and larynx, and of the muscles of respiration, developed. That turns out to be from a time long before – from other evidence – we believe we developed language. So what were these developments for?
The answer, according to many anthropologists, appears to have been: in order to sing.
That might sound odd, because we are used to thinking of music as a bit peripheral. But in fact the “music” of speech – in the sense of the intonation and all that is not “just” the content, coupled with other forms of non-verbal communication – constitutes the majority of what it is we communicate, when we do. Denotative language is not necessary for I–thou communication. Music is largely right-hemisphere-dependent, and the aspects of speech that enable us truly to understand the meaning of an utterance at a higher level – including intonation, irony, metaphor, and the meaning of an utterance in context – are still served by the right hemisphere. Denotative language becomes necessary when we have projects: when we need to communicate about a third party, or about things that are not present at the time. It expands immeasurably our capacity for manipulation – what one might call “I–it” communication. It is therefore, necessary, not for communication in itself, but for a certain kind of communication. Equally, there is a mass of evidence that we do not need language to think, even to conceptualise. One rather wonderful example is that, believe it or not, pigeons can distinguish between a Picasso and a Monet, without having any language in which to do it (Cerella, 1980; Matsukawa, Inoue, & Jitsumori, 2004; Watanabe, Sakamoto, & Wakita, 1995). But we also know that tribes that do not have numbers above “three” can calculate perfectly well to much larger numbers and have a grasp of concepts they cannot put into words. Language is not necessary for thinking, just for certain kinds of thinking. What was it for, then?

Travels With Max:In Search of Steinbeck's America Fifty Years Later (Gregory Zeigler, Blaine Creek Press, 2010)
Inspired by Travels with Charley, Gregory Zeigler celebrated the 50th anniversary of renowned Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck's storied trip. In 2009, Zeigler and his dog Max drove and camped 15,000 miles over nine weeks, exploring the country and determining what Americans are like today. Travels With Max offers a retrospective on Steinbeck and his work, as well as an insightful, humorous and upbeat perspective on modern America. (amazon)

Mrs B
The
patient, Mrs B, had nearly died of burns when she was eleven months old. What
we did not know until near the end of this analysis was that her mother had
been instructed by a doctor, after the burning, that she must only barrier
nurse her baby: she must never hold her.
A major focus in the analysis was
around a later occasion concerning not being held when, at seventeen months,
Mrs B had to be operated on by a surgeon under a local anaesthetic. During
this, her mother was holding her hand. Then she fainted. Mrs B had imagined
that it had been her fierce need of her, when she was so intensely anxious,
that had been too much for her mother, even that she might have ‘killed’ her
when she disappeared from sight.
In her analysis, when Mrs B began to
re-experience that moment with the surgeon, and then her mother no longer
holding her, she had virtually demanded that I should allow her to hold my hand
if it ever got so bad again. At first I agreed. But almost immediately Mrs B
reverted to her conviction that she would have to protect me. She felt that I
would collapse if it became too much for me. She sensed, quite correctly, that
my offer to hold her hand would be easier for me, too, bypassing the worst that
was still to be faced by allowing focus to be concentrated on the mother who
had not been able to hold her.
When I consulted with Dr Paula Heimann
on this, she agreed with me that I would have to find a way to withdraw the
offer of my hand. In the very next session, Mrs B had an image of me as
stationary, again controlled by her. She saw me becoming a collapsed
analyst. It was then that I knew I must withdraw the offer of my
hand, a clinical decision that several commentators have failed to
understand.

Theories of Object Relations: Bridges to Self Psychology, by Howard
Bacal, Kenneth Newman, Columbia University Press, 1989
(both lively and elegiac)

applied neuroscientist or neuroscience-informed psychotherapist (or psychiatrist) ?
Lost Time: Lectures on Proust in a Soviet Prison Camp (Jozef Czapski, NYRB, 2018-11-6)
The first translation of painter and writer Józef Czapski's inspiring lectures on Proust, first delivered in a prison camp in the Soviet Union during World War II.
During the Second World War, as a prisoner of war in a Soviet camp, and with nothing but memory to go on, the Polish artist and soldier Józef Czapski brought Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time to life for an audience of prison inmates. In a series of lectures, Czapski described the arc and import of Proust’s masterpiece, sketched major and minor characters in striking detail, and movingly evoked the work’s originality, depth, and beauty. Eric Karpeles has translated this brilliant and altogether unparalleled feat of the critical imagination into English for the first time, and in a thoughtful introduction he brings out how, in reckoning with Proust’s great meditation on memory, Czapski helped his fellow officers to remember that there was a world apart from the world of the camp. Proust had staked the art of the novelist against the losses of a lifetime and the imminence of death. Recalling that triumphant wager, unfolding, like Sheherazade, the intricacies of Proust’s world night after night, Czapski showed to men at the end of their tether that the past remained present and there was a future in which to hope.
http://news.dwnews.com/china/big5/news/2018-11-11/60097353.html
